Wood & Metal: How to Pair Them Beautifully

August 19, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

One of the hottest home trends today is pairing wood and metal. And while most of us think of it as rustic meeting industrial, wood and metal can be partnered in almost any home style – from traditional to eclectic to contemporary. Here are some of our suggestions to beautifully blend wood and metal, whatever your décor aesthetic:

Lean either way. You don’t have to commit to wood and metal in equal measure. If you lean toward modern, opt for more metal and minimal wood. Choose cool-toned metals especially nickel, steel and iron; the look is very urban. If, on the other hand, you prefer casual and cozy, choose lots of wood with metal touches. Consider integrating warm metals like bronze and dull gold as accents.

Go with furnishings that combine wood and metal. One of the best ways to explore the wood and metal trend is furnishings that blend the two elements. From bedroom to living room to dining room to office, every conceivable piece, wood tone, metal finish and style is available. Don’t forget, you can always choose smaller pieces in this trend – coffee and end tables, accent tables or a hall table, for example.

Blend separate pieces. Looking to create a one-of-a-kind look? Mix and match separate furnishings to achieve spectacular results. How about a traditional wood dining table with metal chairs? Or a wrought iron headboard with dark wood dressers? Or ultra chic metal end tables with an elegant wood-trimmed sofa? The possibilities are endless!

Look up! An all-wood ceiling is a gorgeous indulgence. Distressed wood is especially trendy and you can make it even more stunning by adding steel beams. The look is very urban loft, but can be achieved in many homes. Keep the furnishings and walls neutral to let the ceiling take centre stage!

How about accessories? Want to sample the wood/metal trend rather than leaping in? No problem! Look for beautiful wood signs (often with inspirational sayings), partnered with metal wall hangings like letters, geometric patterns and much more. Or go a step further with a distressed wood table in your hallway partnered with galvanized metal boxes for gloves, umbrellas, etc. How about a wrought iron gate repurposed as a unique wall hanging, positioned with a rustic wood bench?

Try antiques with metal. The ultimate juxtaposition is vintage wood with industrial metal. Rich oak, walnut and mahogany antique pieces get a new life next to fun and fresh metal benches, chairs and tables. Use your creativity!

Stick with durable, solid pieces. Whatever your décor style, metal and wood pairings have an air of solidity. Clean lines define the look; it’s never dainty or fussy. Be sure to choose pieces that reflect that – simple, strong and uncomplicated – yet definitely stylish!

Whatever your style sensibilities, pairing wood and metal is a trend that you can easily achieve – as a major statement or a striking accent.

Italian Styling: From Rome to Tuscany, How to Get the Look

August 12, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Italian styling encompasses a wide range: from casual, charming Tuscan villas to grand old world homes. What they all have in common is a celebration of art, nature, beauty and most importantly, family. Even in a modest Italian cottage, nothing is truly small. Here are some ideas to bring Italian styling to your home – whether you love elegant grandeur or simple coziness:

Warm walls. Italian homes typically have warm colours on the walls – whether cream, yellow, rich green or earthy brown. Oftentimes walls are plaster, brick, stucco or limestone, especially in more informal homes.

Natural woods. Wood is a hallmark of Italian style. It’s traditionally dark, but in modern homes it may be lighter with a lot of detailing for character. In Tuscan-inspired homes, you’ll find natural wood beams and wood harvest tables. In larger, formal homes you’ll see glossy, ornate furnishings, often in walnut, chestnut and fir.

Massive furniture. Whether for the bedroom, living room or dining room, Italian-inspired design is solid and projects a feeling of abundance. Even modern Italian pieces are wonderfully generous and welcoming.

Masonry. Italian homes, whether simple or grand, almost always use masonry – on walls, floors, countertops and wherever! Marble is a classic option and looks spectacular on countertops and washroom and foyer floors. Stone is much more rugged; it looks perfect in a more rustic space but also in juxtaposition to traditional elegance. Terra cotta tiles are another timeless choice, especially for kitchens.

Renaissance-inspired. Grander Italian homes have a Renaissance quality. Cathedral ceilings are often custom painted with murals, lavish art adorns the walls, large sculptures grace the hallway and multi-tiered chandeliers welcome guests in the foyer. Tuscan countryside homes are much less opulent, yet still there an air of quality.

Display joy! The Italian love of life is reflected in home décor. Never minimalist, spaces are always filled with objects and accessories that celebrate family and friends. Display ceramic dishware, wines, artwork and bowls of fresh fruit, for example.

Intricate details. Elaborately carved wood on legs, arms and even chair backs is common on Italian furniture, as is gilding, antiquing and ornate decoration. Of course, contemporary pieces may be much more understated, but always there is a feeling of quality and handcrafted elegance.

Metals. Whether metal edging on wood furniture, a bronze sculpture, copper pots hanging in the kitchen, large brass candlesticks or a wrought iron gate, metals and metallic finishes are a staple in homes with Italian décor. Generally, warmer metals suit Italian colour schemes, so opt for gold, brass, bronze and copper – and mix them up!

Simple linens. With so much sensory input in furnishings, walls, accessories and flooring, Italian homes often look best with simple linens – try crisp white, cream or other neutrals for draperies and bed coverings. For simple homes, choose ‘fresh off the clothesline’ cottons; for more opulent homes, select gorgeous linens and silks.

Remember, at the core of Italian styling is a love of life. With that as your guiding mantra, you’re sure to create a space that’s ‘bellissimo’!

Tips for Easy Entertaining

August 6, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Having friends and family visit your home, whether for a small dinner gathering or a large cocktail party, can be overwhelming; we all want to impress and to ensure our guests have a fabulous time. Relax and enjoy! It can be easier than you think. Here are some of our favourite ideas to help make every get-together a success:

Set up a bar cart. Let your guests help themselves to drinks – they’ll love the freedom to choose what they want and it frees up your time to socialize. Not to mention, a bar cart stocked with your best crystal makes an elegant style statement.

Be sure everyone has a table surface. A table of some sort should be within easy reach of each guest. If you’re eating buffet/lap style, it’s even more important. A coffee table works well of course, as well as small accent tables or nesting tables that can be tucked away after your event.

Integrate multiple lighting sources. Too bright or too dim lights can ruin the ambience of a room and make interaction uncomfortable. Use a combination of lamps, muted overhead lighting and even candles to create lighting that is warm and welcoming.

Bring life into the room. It’s not a party without fresh flowers! Display something special in a unique vase or pitcher. A planter with fresh lavender is always lovely for its appearance and its calming scent.

Ensure open, easy access. It may be a challenge with a small space, but make sure there’s open flow in a room – around dining tables, sofas, chairs, etc. These help your guests from being cramped or bumping their legs on your coffee table.

Remove the clutter. If you’re having a large crowd, store some of your trinkets. Tables should be mostly clear to enable guests to lay down drinks, plates or personal items like their phones. If children are attending, move breakables and any items with sharp edges.

Personalize your space. One of my favourite things about visiting someone’s home is seeing how it reflects their character. Don’t be shy to display a prized collection, photographs you’ve taken, artifacts from your travels or a framed poem you love.

Have plenty of seating. Make sure there’s ample seating for all and create conversation nooks for small groups and quiet one-on-ones. Benches, ottomans and occasional chairs are ideal as they’re easily moved from one location to another.

Play the right music. Have you ever been to a party where the music is too loud or harsh or filled with commercials? Instead choose soft music that all can enjoy, played low but audible so there’s sure to be a background atmosphere.

Why not invite some friends over for dinner? Have fun – and impress them!

Dreaming of a White Living Room? Here’s How to Keep It Cozy and Inviting.

July 29, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

A white living room is sophisticated and stylish. Many of us yearn for the beauty of a white living space, but we shy away, worried it will be impractical, or possibly even uninviting. But it doesn’t have to be either! Let’s explore how to make a white living room warm, welcoming and low maintenance.

Impractical? Not necessarily! Start with the sofa and chairs. When it comes to upholstery, look for fabric that is easy to clean and maintain. Another option is to choose seating in soft greys or light taupes rather than white. Likewise with rugs, try an alternative to white such as jute or sisal. It will accentuate the white in your room perfectly and of course, is much easier to maintain.

The Right White. You would be surprised just how many choices are available when choosing white paint. Choosing a warm white, vs a stark cold white can make all the difference in creating a warm and inviting feeling. Cloud White, Simply White and White Dove by Benjamin Moore are some great options.

Distressed Versus Modern. To avoid a ‘don’t touch feeling’ in your white room, adopt a relaxed style. Opt for the inherent ease of distressed woods, plush sofas and touches of vintage. If too modern, all white can appear cold and unwelcoming.

Rugged Floors. In keeping with the laid-back theme, rugged, imperfect wood floors keep a white room grounded and casual. If you prefer a more formal look, try dark, glossy wood floors.

Wood Accents. Speaking of wood, quality wood furnishings add plenty of ambience to a white living room. Whether polished or distressed, coffee tables, accent tables or bookcases in wood bring your white room to life! Even wood trim on soft furnishings like sofas and accent chairs will look fabulous. But as mentioned above, remember that glossy woods are always more formal.

Texture. Choose a range of materials for your upholstery and draperies, some smooth, some nubby. It will make a white room much more inviting. Throw cushions are an easy way to add texture. Think outside the box with interesting textures for lamp bases, ceiling fixtures and your accent pieces. Perhaps even consider ceiling beams or a sliding barn door if your budget and room permits.

Poufs, Benches and Ottomans. There’s something inherently welcoming about these conversation-conducive seats. Besides, upholstery adds texture and comfort. Choose white or another neutral.

White and Metallic Accessories. I love the look of all white accessories. Assemble a collection of white candlesticks and vases or other items, and mix up the periods for a stylish look. Metallic accents also look fabulous in an all-white room. Keep in mind warm metallics like bronze or brass are cozier than cool metallics like chrome or nickel.

Pop of Colour. If all white is still a bit too stark for you, there’s always room for an injection of colour. How about a statement furniture piece or artwork in a vibrant hue? A brilliant-coloured accent chest, chair or abstract painting all work perfectly.
