Top 5 Décor Trends for Fall 2015:

  1. Ethnic, Worldly, Personal Spaces. Celebrate your individuality! Showcase accessories from your travels, furniture from global sources and personal collections. Your space should reflect YOU.
  2. Textured Accents. Adding texture adds character. Look for carved wood pieces, textured glass, corduroy cushions and cast iron sculptures.
  3. Bright Colours and Graphic Prints. If you’ve ever wanted a lime green accent chair, a bedroom painted in saturated blue or vividly-patterned geometric wallpaper, now is the time.
  4. Distressed Finishes. Even if your space is traditional, consider a piece or two in one-of-a-kind, distressed wood. How about a hall chest, living room armoire or dining room table?
  5. Mix & Match. Consider mix & match living room, bedroom and dining room furniture. While suites are classic, variety adds an eclectic vibe. Ground it with common colours or finishes.

DRAPERY PROGRAM. Stoney Creek Furniture’s Drapery Program will create a totally custom look for your home. There are over 100 fabrics to choose from (all the latest!), lots of options for headings and hardware and of course, expert in-store guidance. What’s more, if you need help in-home, we offer dimension checking and installation. Ready for inspiration? Here’s what’s new in fall draperies:

Top 5 Drapery Trends for Fall 2015:

  1. Bold, Natural or Luxurious Fabrics. Bold prints are a strong trend – geometrics, trellis patterns and graphic florals. Natural materials like linen and cotton are also popular for a minimalist look. If you yearn for glamour, velvet and silks are perfect, embellished with crystals and tassels.
  2. Simple and Streamlined Styling. Whatever fabric you choose, simplicity reigns. Gone are the tufts and swags in favour of a cleaner, crisper aesthetic.
  3. Longer and Wider Appearance. Draperies that make more of your window are popular – extending wider and longer than the window. Puddling remains on trend, although less is more; opt for a little extra rather than piles of fabric on the floor.
  4. Statement Metallic Hardware. Warm metallic hardware adds richness to your draperies. Gold, brass and copper are the trendsetter’s choice.
  5. Complementary Layers. For a look of abundance, try layering; for example, custom blinds with matching draperies or iridescent sheers with white cotton draperies. The difference from past years is that the fabrics should always complement rather than contrast.

Beautiful Bed Linens…and Other Ways to Make Your Bedroom Cozy for Autumn

October 9, 2015 by Stoney Creek Furniture

With longer, cooler evenings upon us, it’s time to cozy up for the season ahead. But instead of focusing on the living room, let’s consider the bedroom. It’s your little oasis of relaxation and deserves special attention. Whether for a quiet read or a bedtime snuggle, your bedroom should be the coziest room in the house. Here are some of our favourite suggestions:

New Bed Linens. Nothing changes the look and feel of a bedroom more completely than new bed linens. For fall, think texture and layer upon layer of sheets, comforters, pillows, etc. The look should be lavish. But don’t think it has to be dark to be season-appropriate; light linens are just as cozy – the secret is in volume and a feeling of plenty. Include a variety of textures and complementary colours. The ensembles shown here fit the bill beautifully – and range from modern neutrals to geometric-inspired to traditional florals.

How to Choose Quality Bed Sheets. As important as your mattress for comfort, choosing the right sheets takes a little know-how. Here are the main points to evaluate:

  • Fabric. Egyptian and Pima cottons are considered the highest quality materials. Egyptian is durable and luxurious while Pima is a little softer with more sheen. Look for 100% cotton in these choices or consider a high quality blend that guarantees smoothness and no pilling.
  • Finish/Weave. Percale is a lightweight weave that produces crisp, cool, bedding; sateen is lustrous and extra-smooth while microfiber is wrinkle-resistant and extra-soft.
  • Thread Count. This refers to the number of threads per square inch. While higher is often considered better, remember that a lower-count sheet in a higher-quality fabric may feel better than a high-count sheet in a low-quality fabric. Anything over 400/450 count is a good choice.
  • Detailing. Look for details like deep pockets, tailored edges, strong elastic on fitted sheets and inverted, hidden zippers. These touches add to the fit, comfort and durability of your linens.

Add upholstered furniture. Upholstered pieces add instant coziness to a room. Consider a loveseat in gorgeous grey – go glam with a tufted tuxedo style or a more contemporary streamlined piece. If you have the space, a chaise or snuggler chair is the ultimate indulgence, perhaps showcased by a window for natural reading light. If your space is tighter, choose a bed-end bench. Continue the tufting theme or choose a trendy but timeless all-metal bench. There options are endless.

Update your rugs, draperies and throws. When you’re upping your cozy factor, add a new rug or draperies. Patterns add more depth and interest than plain choices. Consider a shag rug and indulge in silk, damask or even velvet draperies for the cold months. Don’t forget, you don’t need to go dark – white is warm when displayed plentifully; two layers of sheer draperies in creamy lace or champagne linen would be charming! HINT: Throws are the most affordable way to add coziness. Lay one or two across your bed, chair or bench. Faux fur is especially trendy, as is alpaca.

Paint with a rich colour scheme. Certain colour combinations add warmth and charm effortlessly. How about trying muted reds, yellows and oranges? The trick is to go soft rather than bold. Or perhaps something unique like chocolate brown, soft blue and white? Don’t overlook white either; shades of white with a creamy/ivory base are very inviting. In fact all neutral colour schemes are very cozy, providing you stick to warm rather than cool shades. HINT: Neutrals look good year after year and enable you to add colour and variety in your wall hangings and accessories.

10 Easy Home Projects You Can Do Before Thanksgiving

October 1, 2015 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Thanksgiving is approaching quickly – but not so quickly that you don’t have time to make a few easy updates with these easy home projects! Our ideas won’t take a lot of hours but will create a lot of impact. Your guests are sure to be impressed with the results. Read on for inspiration…

  1. Monogram napkins. Set your Thanksgiving table with personalized napkins for each guest. Just their initial will do. If you know how to embroider (it’s easier than you think), a basic chain link stitch works well– templates are easy to find online or in store. If you don’t embroider, there are some great iron-on monograms. The trick is to choose a thick, high quality white linen napkin and be sure to place the monogram in the left corner for maximum visibility.
  2. Buy a bench. Whether you use it for extra seating in your living room or for a quick seat in the foyer, guests will appreciate the classic beauty and functionality. HINT: If the height is right, a bench can also be used as a dining room chair to hold several people.durham bench
  3. Create a one-of-a-kind mum display at your front door. This is so easy and cute. Discard the top and carve out two large pumpkins and use them as planters for your mums. Put one on either side of your front door. Bright yellow mums look especially lovely against the orange pumpkin.
  4. Paint an accent wall. Maybe behind the server/hutch wall in your dining room, or behind the fireplace/TV wall in your living room or maybe in your hallway. Either way, choose a wall that’s focal and a darker, richer paint colour for fall. Saturated blues are very on trend, or a timeless mid-toned grey or perhaps even a muted russet/red. Choose something that complements your existing décor, but don’t be afraid to go bold.Elena Collection
  5. Hang a chic mirror. Let your guests adjust their hair and make-up in a statement mirror, ideal for the foyer or powder room.bernhardt mirror
  6. Wallpaper the powder room. The powder room is ideal for experimentation – and because of its size, you can go luxury and lavish. Wallpaper is so on trend now. Choose textured or something with metallic accents or a bold graphic/geometric. Want to really add impact? Consider a wallpaper mural if the room’s dimensions allow it. There are gorgeous patterns available.
  7. Update your linens. This is a tried and true way to welcome the new season. Go a little darker and heavier for fall. Add a couple of throws (plaid or tartan is in), buy some new throw pillows in cozy chunky knits, spice up your dining table with a new runner and perhaps add a new rug to your entranceway. Don’t stick to basic colours in your accents. Rich royal purple, blues and teal are stylish and warm.
  8. Paint your front door. Greet your Thanksgiving guests in style! I love traditional gloss black or red, but depending on your décor style, you may prefer something edgier. Orange, yellow and lime green are becoming popular – as is a more conservative dark blue or teal.
  9. Add a baker’s rack. Thanksgiving is one of the many times you’ll be glad you added one of these classic pieces to your kitchen. It provides great extra storage but also an opportunity to showcase some of your dishware – or to grow some herbs.products_universal_color_cordevalle_313674-b2
  10. Install a chalkboard in your kitchen. These are cropping up everywhere with unique frames that make them as much artful as practical. I love the idea of writing your Thanksgiving menu on the board for guests to see when they arrive.

Entertainment Centres: How to Choose and How to Decorate

September 25, 2015 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Let’s admit that most of us love our TVs! Whether for a family movie night or viewing your favourite series, the TV is the focal point of most living rooms. Unfortunately though, TVs aren’t the most attractive piece of furniture. Here’s where entertainment centres can help! Before you think you don’t have the space or that you wouldn’t find one to match your décor, have a read about some common misconceptions and décor tips!E3269-Harper-Farm

You think: “Entertainment units are all big.”
No! Even if your space is smaller, you can still fit an entertainment unit. Many have a small footprint, about the same width as a mid-sized TV. You’re actually creating real estate by adding shelves.Largo media unit

You think: “Entertainment units lack style—they’re all basic brown wood.”
Not anymore! Whether your home is contemporary, traditional or somewhere in between, there’s an entertainment centre that will accentuate your style. Check out the rustic, distressed and classic options available. There are also sleek, modern versions with minimal detailing – whatever works in your home.Canyon Creek 303.103600

You think: “Can I really fit everything neatly in an entertainment centre?”
Absolutely! Consider a larger model with doors, drawers and shelves. Keep in mind that if you want to hide your DVDs, movies, etc., choose a unit with solid doors. You can also choose an entertainment centre with doors covering the TV, for a really put together look.

You think: “I need a large-sized entertainment centre, but I don’t want it to overwhelm the room.
Some units have full or partial backs, some are fully open. To minimize the impact, choose an open backed model, letting the wall behind show through – and keep your display items less obtrusive – also to show more wall.Mercantile entertainment

Speaking of walls. The wall behind an entertainment centre is an ideal choice for an accent wall. It’s already the focal point, so perhaps choose to paint it a different colour or add bold striped wallpaper?

Now that you have extra display shelves, how do you decorate them?

  • Storage. Store items you don’t want visible behind doors. Need more storage? Use baskets on the shelves. They add texture, look great and keep accessories, etc. out of sight but in easy reach.
  • Theme. Display items of a particular genre – stone sculptures, wood carvings or pottery for example. Place throughout the unity to unify the display.
  • Family items. Collections or mementos are perfect. A model airplane, a musical instrument, etc.
  • Books. Always welcome, provided they are hard cover and aesthetically pleasing. HINT: Sometimes a book jacket hides a beautiful cover and binding underneath!
  • Mirrors and art. Add height, depth and colour with small mirrors or framed photos/art.
  • Mix it up. Even if you’re using a theme, keep it interesting – showcase items of various size, shape, colour and form.
  • Don’t forget the top! Many units have a full shelf along the top. What a great place for a collection of vases and a beautiful plant.

Before you grab the TV remote, explore your entertainment centre options. Consider the beauty, functionality and organization they can add to your home.
