Introducing Marsala – Pantone’s 2015 Colour of the Year

December 12, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Marsala is a rich, fortified red wine – and much like its namesake, Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2015 is earthy, soothing, satisfying and wonderfully robust. Pantone, the world leader in all things to do with colour, recently announced the selection, declaring it “enriches our minds, bodies and souls”. That’s a tall order, but it may in fact be true! Marsala is one of those rare colours that stirs and soothes the senses all at once; it is warm but never overwhelming; it’s sultry but still fresh…

What are some fabulous facts about Marsala?

  • Marsala is sophisticated. Just a little will instantly make any room more glamorous and elegant.
  • Marsala has both feminine and masculine appeal. It’s not too sweet, not too rugged – it pleases (almost) everyone’s sensibilities.
  • Marsala is versatile. You can use it in any room, with any décor style and it works well with a diverse range of colours – as a pop against neutrals or in harmony with other shades.
  • Marsala matches all skin tones. Yes, we’re talking about décor, not fashion, but don’t you agree it’s clever to decorate in colours that enhance your good looks and make your skin glow?!

What colours work with Marsala?

  • Neutrals. Marsala is an amazing accent colour in a primarily neutral room. It pairs with almost any neutral – but is especially beautiful with grey, white, cream, ecru, jute beige and black.
  • Contrast. For maximum impact, look to the opposite of the colour wheel. You’ll find shades of green and blue, from olive to lime to denim. Venture a little outside with golds and yellows.
  • Side-by-Side. For a more subtle approach, pair Marsala with nearby hues on the colour wheel – pinks, purples and even some reds.

How should you use Marsala in your home?

Most would recommend using Marsala sparingly, but really, it depends on the lighting in your home, the size of the space, the furniture – and most importantly – how fond you are of the colour. It’s very intense, so if you don’t absolutely adore Marsala, don’t go overboard. Here are some ideas to add Marsala to your home:

  • With Wood. Marsala works with all woods, whether in furniture or flooring. It’s especially elegant against dark woods, but be sure to keep things lively by adding pale shades in fabrics, etc.
  • One Gorgeous Piece. Good furniture is an investment, so I usually recommend buying neutrals. But buying one piece in a spectacular colour like Marsala can totally uplift a room. How about a chaise, accent chair or hassock? If you’re not sold on solid Marsala, look for it in patterns.
  • One Wall. You can paint a whole room in Marsala, but the effect is very powerful. If you have high ceilings and lots of natural light, go for it – otherwise limit it to an accent wall or in a fun space like the powder room.
  • Accessories. I promise that you will see Marsala in myriad décor items over the upcoming months. Look for pillows, linens, curtains, art, candles, etc. Again, apply sparingly. This colour is very rich.
  • Textured Surfaces. One of most exciting properties of Marsala is that it looks even more exciting when textured – choose it for rugs, nubby silks and upholstery.

Decorating for the Holidays: How to Stay on Theme

December 5, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

If you’re like me, you love to decorate your home for the holidays – it’s a beautiful tradition. But have you ever considered if your decorations are on theme with your space? Do they look ‘organic’ to your decor or totally incongruent? Most of us use the same items year after year. But maybe this year it’s time to take inventory and make some updates. Done correctly, your holiday décor will integrate so perfectly, you’ll almost want to keep it on display all year! Here are some suggestions to help you get started:

What is your home’s style? Is it contemporary, traditional, eclectic, Bohemian or country casual? Most of us have a blend that falls under transitional, but if your home is definitely one distinct style, be true to it, even at holiday time. It means being discriminating. Look at each element. Does it truly fit?

What works with your home’s style? Holiday decorations are remarkably diverse today. It’s time to re-assess. If your home is traditional, green and red may actually be perfect: a classic Christmas tree, green garland, etc. But if your home is contemporary, go for silver, white and a minimalist approach. If it’s Bohemian, experiment with homemade decorations and ‘crafty’ pieces. If it’s Victorian, add antique items, glass balls and ornate centerpieces.

What’s on trend in holiday decor? Your home welcomes lots of guests during the holidays. There’s no better time to showcase your creativity! Here’s what’s new:

  • Black & White. This is gorgeous in a contemporary home. Focus on the white; you don’t want to be macabre. Black should be used sparingly, perhaps combined with metallics. A white wreath on the door, black and white bows on the tree and black and white gift wrap. In a more traditional home, pair it with red.
  • Theme. If you are passionate about a hobby or style, incorporate it into your holiday décor. My friend is a musician and decorates his tree exclusively in musical instruments. The giant nutcracker (pictured above and perfect for the foyer) inspires me to fill my home with nutcrackers of all sizes, perhaps blended with a ballet theme. Maybe you adore cats or old movies. They all make fun themes that are perfect for the holiday season. Always apply sparingly of course.
  • Outdoorsy. This is my favourite look. A real tree is a must, perhaps decorated in cranberries, popcorn and hand-me-down ornaments. Wreathes are made from real spruce and fir. Candles are abundant. The mantel hosts real branches, twigs, pine cones and holly berries. Bright red apples are décor elements. This can work beautifully in any theme, but best suits country casual or eclectic.
  • White. So serene! For a country theme, go natural with lots of greenery, homemade accents and lace. For contemporary, stay pure, blending with ivory and touches of green.
  • Bling. A little sparkle is always appropriate during the holiday season. Go glamourous with a Great Gatsby theme! Mirrors, crystal, silverware – include all your sparkly treasures to reflect light. White twinkly lights throughout your home will enhance the glow.
  • Pastel. Pale pinks, purples and blues can be gorgeous. Choose one colour you love and incorporate it with traditional holiday colours. Blue has been a seasonal favourite for many years. Choose complementary shades and embrace it fully in your home this year!

How to Decorate with Cream and Ivory

Is anything more refined and beautiful than a space decorated in creams, ivories and winter whites? It is utterly simplistic, a breath of fresh air – in the relative absence of colour, the effect is soothing and serene. But don’t be fooled, decorating in creams takes know-how to keep it from being one-dimensional. Here are some suggestions on how to decorate with cream and ivory:

Diversity. This is very important. Decorating with ivories doesn’t mean exclusively using these shades. You still need to add contrast and variety with other neutrals like beige, taupe, gold and warm grey – keeping it subtle of course. I love the addition of ‘washed’ neutral shades, looking slightly worn and lived in. True white can also be incorporated, but not stark/blue white; try something soft.

Architectural Details. Adding architectural variety is a great way to give your cream/ivory décor a boost of energy. Cornices, baseboards, wainscoting, beams and pillars all add depth. Be sure to keep them in your palette.

Texture. When colour takes a back seat, texture takes centre stage. In your cream and ivory palette, add interest with plenty of texture, layering and soft patterns. Sisal or shag rugs, plush throws, patterned pillows, tall candlesticks, suede side chairs, diffuse animal prints and so on.

Organic Colour. Every room needs a touch of organic colour to make it come alive. Ivory rooms are no different – in fact it’s more essential here to prevent a ‘clinical’ look. Choose a bowl of fruit, a bouquet of flowers, a green plant, a twig wreath…

Perhaps a Little Colour. If you’re not sold on 100% neutral, a great idea is to add a touch of colour in a very soft shade – icy blue or green are perfect. I love using these colours on the ceiling of a room as well – it’s unexpected and adds so much ambience.

Furniture and Finishes. Another great thing about a neutral ivory room is that your furniture really stands out. As well, because the background is so simple, you can mix it up without it being overwhelming. Virtually any finish and style of furniture will work, but I have a preference for gorgeous complementary pale ivory pieces. In complete opposition, other great choices are distressed or rugged furniture. They offer much-desired texture and contrast wonderfully with the sophistication of creams and ivories. Consider bleached and pickled pieces too which are perfectly on palette.

Metallic and Shine. A touch of sparkle is welcome in an ivory space. Brushed gold, nickel and pewter are ideal choices as they aren’t too loud – but a little bling in crystal, mirrors and silver is suitable too, adding glamour.

Practicality. On a final note, if you’re practical like me, you’re probably thinking that ivory and cream just won’t hold up in your home. If you’re worried, choose darker neutrals for big pieces like sofas and rugs and go lighter on walls, curtains, linens and in less-used rooms. I also suggest slip covers and pillow covers that are removable and washable.

Cream and ivory décor is classic and timeless. When you’re ready to redecorate, consider it for your home. It’s a look you’ll love for years.

Holiday House Tour: Create the Look in Your Space!

November 24, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

If you visited this year’s Junior League’s Holiday House Tour in Hamilton-Burlington, you‘re probably still daydreaming about the absolutely gorgeous homes! If you’ve wanted to create some of the looks you saw in your own home, but don’t know where to begin, you’re in luck. Even if you didn’t attend the show, you’ll still be inspired. Let’s have a closer look at one special home …

The homeowner wanted a comfy, casual space where family and friends could gather, but still craved some sparkle for the holiday season. Working with the team at Stoney Creek Furniture, her dream space became a reality.

The Design Aesthetic. The home has a definite contemporary feeling about it, but with a warmth and ease that speaks to traditional – a beautiful blend best described as transitional. The ceiling lighting is simple and elegant, giving a ‘twinkle’ effect. The flooring is perfect in any décor setting, a rich oak hardwood with a contrasting patterned rug in ivory tones. The overall feeling is glamourous, yet still decidedly down-to-earth.

The Colour Palette. The walls are painted in Benjamin Moore Metropolis, a wonderfully rich grey – the new neutral of choice. It’s a perfect foundation to add a mixed palette of creams, rusts, golds and greens, all in warm shades that say ‘welcome’.

The Furniture. It started with the relaxed sectional in a classic grey with just a hint of soft teal, coordinating with the wall colour perfectly. With the staples in place, it was time to get creative. Two accent chairs were added in a vivid rust and cream lattice pattern. From there, one-of-a-kind pieces were incorporated for eclectic appeal – including simple end tables in a delicious molasses finish, a unique Paris hourglass table, a Paris cube, a fun pouf in desert sand and a sophisticated plank top coffee table in a waxy black finish. In contrast, the Magnolia entertainment console is off-white with a touch of country charm. These unique pieces are all anchored by a neutral-based colour scheme, clean lines and casual appeal.

The Accessories. From the two mirrors to the extraordinary lamp, the one-of-a-kind theme continues. The deer print set and deer head are totally on trend this season, but are especially appropriate during the holidays. Let’s not forget the throw pillows in deep orange, rust and teal. They are instrumental in unifying the palette of this room, not to mention being super cozy.

The Holiday Accessories. The holiday theme is a beautiful blending of natural and bling. It starts with simple basics – jars filled with twigs, birch slice wreathes, arrangements with real evergreens and birch and natural touches throughout. Nothing is lovelier than natural. To make it holiday ready, a glimmer of shimmer was added with sequin cone trees, sparkly rust twig tress, champagne coloured wreathes – even sparkly pillows and throws in luxurious faux fur.

Are you feeling motivated to get your home decorated for the season? I certainly am! Hopefully the Junior League Holiday House Tour and the talented team at Stoney Creek Furniture gave you some great ideas for your decor!
