Inexpensive design ideas for your patio

July 22, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Mid-season is a great time to make changes or additions to spruce up your patio – while there’s still lots of time to enjoy it. Here are a few of our budget-friendly ideas to help you enhance your patio for the balance of this season and for summers to come.

Path Polka Dots. Do you have a plain gravel path leading to your patio area? An easy and affordable way to give it personality is to randomly add concrete circles along the way. Be sure you learn correct installation so that they are stable for walking.PathwayFeng Shui. A fountain may be out of your budget but what about a birdbath? Water adds a wonderful quality to any patio area and it’s so soothing to watch bird visitors splashing about!patioTrellis. What a great way to add prettiness and privacy to your patio. Flowers like wisteria and clematis quickly create a wall of colour on a trellis. Add them now and enjoy the rest of the summer – and next year they will be spectacular.colourful patioColour. If your patio is largely stone and concrete, punch it up with colour! Add a bench or twin chairs in a bright colour like red or yellow. Bring out some throw cushions in gorgeous florals for comfy, beautiful bench seating.patio

Wicker. While we’re talking about colour and seating, wicker is a charming and low cost way to provide both. Flea market wicker finds can be easily repaired and painted bright or in pastels (don’t you love this season’s mint green?) for the shabby chic look. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colours.patio

Repurpose. This theme is common in our blogs – and why not? It’s good to give an item another “life” and what a great way to save money. (Not to mention adding style to your space!) Consider galvanized tubs for planters or as an ice bucket for a party, soup cans as small flower pots, an antique high chair or wooden step ladder as plant holders, a wine cask halved as the base of a coffee table.lunch on the patio

Lighting. Of course you need proper outdoor lighting for safety, but accent lighting adds so much atmosphere. My favourite are strings of fairy lights – little Christmas lights that twinkle – consider them in colour as well as white. There are also beautiful paper lanterns for special events – check Asian shops for great ideas. And here’s an idea. Bring out a lamp from inside and throw a sheer scarf over it to soften the glow. Perfect for a late night chat!Decorative christmas lights for a back yard party

Shell Table. This is a project I saw online and think it is just gorgeous. If you have a plain, boring patio table or side table, make it one of a kind just by gluing on sea shells. You may have shells from your travels, but they can also be bought inexpensively. Just glue them on around the perimeter and even down the legs if you like. Add lots!<

Rocks. Beach rocks, jagged rocks, coloured rocks – they all add personality to your outdoor space. Rocks are a great divider for different areas of your yard or can be grouped as an artful display.<

Art. On a patio you ask? Why not! I have a deck attached to my house and hanging on the side of the house, which serves as a “wall” for my deck, are 4 beautiful plates made of concrete and etched with patterns. Hang anything you like, making sure of course, that’s it’s either protected from weather or weather safe.

However you dress up your patio this season, the important thing is to gather friends and family, make some memories and enjoy! Have fun.

Chic within Reach! Tips, Ideas and Gorgeous Furniture

July 15, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

I really like the expression “chic within reach” because most of us don’t have a big decor budget, yet we do have huge expectations. We all want our homes to be stylish and chic. We want it to look like we spent a lot; but actually want to get ‘The Look’ quite affordably. Here are a few “do’s and don’ts” to help you put chic within your reach – without going overboard on spending.

DON’T buy mass produced cheap art. There are alternatives! Frame your kids’ art (or yours). Frame your photos. Support your local art scene by purchasing from an up and coming, young artist. Also, many art schools have end of the year ‘art sales’ featuring the students’ work at great prices. Maybe the piece you buy will be from the next “Warhol”.

DO go big. Small trinkets can look cheaper. Bigger says plenty and luxury. Buy big fluffy cushions, large floor vases, big candles, statement sculpture and so on.

DON’T hang heavy curtain. Heavy draperies cost a lot but don’t always say chic. Go light and breezy; use lightweight fabrics with generous proportions.

DO little things that make a big difference. Buy new lampshades. Hang new shower curtain. Use plush towels. Go high end on these things – don’t skimp. Quality details scream chic.

DON’T throw away every old item. Revamping and re-purposing are great ways to add style on a budget. I saw a big glass jar with a string of Christmas lights inside being used as a lamp. It was lovely (and chic). Before you toss, reconsider. Will paint fix it? How about new upholstery? How can you use something in a new way?

DON’T overlook paint. Paint the backs of your bookcases a different colour. Paint your ceilings something other than white (lavender is the latest). Paint your walls two colours – add a chair rail. These are simple changes that can say stylish.

DO splurge sometimes. When you fall in love with something beautiful, buy it. Train your eye to know what will add real character and chic to your home – and when you see it – own it. A whole room can be based around a spectacular headboard or piece of art or rug or armoire. Invest wisely and you will enjoy it for a lifetime.

Finally, DO come see the Salon line now at Stoney Creek Furniture. You DON’T want to miss this fabulous style and value! The industry is buzzing about this gorgeous line of furniture that is incredibly chic, at a “within reach” price point.

The Geometric Décor Trend: “Shape” Up Your Home!

July 7, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

The last time I seriously thought about geometry was Grade 10 math class. Back then, I must admit, it wasn’t my favourite subject. But this year, with fashion and home décor strongly influenced by geometric patterns, I am falling in love with circles, triangles and pyramids!Huntington Leather ChestGeometric shapes are showing up everywhere in the home. Walls, furniture, mirrors, accent pieces and upholstery to name a few. Typically, the geometric look goes with contemporary décor and bold colour – think “funky”. But this season, it’s become accessible to those who prefer traditional styling. You’ll see touches of geometric print, geometrics in pastel hues and geometric styling in furniture that works beautifully in more elegant homes.

How to Add the Geometric Look

Deciding to incorporate the geometric trend into your home is easy… but what should you add? How far should you go? A lot comes down to budget. If you just want to spend a little, look to feature geometrics in your accessories and accents. Here are a few ideas:

Rugs. You can keep your room as is and add only a bold geometric rug and WOW, what a difference! Popular choices include circles, zig zags and blocks of colour.Juniper by Surya

Pillows. There is an amazing selection available in any colour, size or material. If you are only adding a few geometric touches, bolder colour may be a good choice. Orange, cobalt, fuchsia and emerald are great options!Colorful pillows on a sofa with white brick wall in background

Wallpaper. A whole room in a strong geometric wall paper pattern is for diehard fans only – but what about an accent wall? Imagine how it could update your dining room or bedroom!

Mirrors. Most mirrors are ovals, squares or rectangles, which are of course, geometric shapes. But perhaps this is the season to be adventurous and add mirrors with real excitement! You’ll find mirrors with triangular bevels, inlays of criss-cross lines, frames with intricate angle patterns, scalloped edges and my favourite, perfectly circular mirrors.Hooker Furniture Melange

Accessories. Picture things in unexpected shapes… like square flower pots, triangular serving plates, octagon wall clocks – that’s the fun of the geometric trend. Another great idea is using multiples of geometric shapes – for example, 12 small square photos grouped on a wall or a shelf with alternating square and round plates.Caracole Classic Mirror

Styling. If you have a bigger budget, you may want to add furniture to your home in the geometric style. Some of the pieces are quite classic and blend with any home decor – the juxtaposition of looks can be stunning! Look for very clean lines in furniture; legs should be straight, not curved. You’ll find many of the pieces look retro to the 1950s and 60s. I love occasional chairs from that era with straight arms, tubular legs and simple styling. You’ll see that look again now in all the same saturated colours. Elipse Cocktail TableFinishes. Another geometric trend in furniture is to add pattern and finishes to the piece. Look for swirls, triangles and “maze-like” designs painted on the finish. A particularly beautiful touch is leather inlays in geometric patterns.Hooker Furniture MélangeAccent Pieces. Occasional furniture is a great place to add the geometric look to your home. Chests, desks, accent tables and lamps can make an excellent focal point and dramatic statement.Hooker Furniture Melange

Enjoy the geometric trend!  It’s a great way to infuse your home with bold shapes, a pop of colour and a fun sense of style!

Cottage Décor: Charming and Chic on a Budget

June 28, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

cottageAh the cottage… lazy days and quiet nights… it’s your summer retreat, your escape. But while the living is easy, there’s no reason your cottage can’t be stylish as well as comfy. There’s nothing wrong with knotty pine, but with a little effort and imagination, your cottage can be so much more!

Eclectic, Shabby Chic, Country Casual…what’s your cottage style?

The cottage is the perfect setting to embrace a feel-good, “mismatched” decor. Of course, you’ll still want to bring it all together in a manner that’s pleasing to the eye. Have a look at some of our favourite ways to make your cottage cheerful and beautiful, without spending a fortune:

cottagePaint. White paint is your best friend at the cottage. If your walls, furniture, mantelpiece, staircase or anything else is dark and dreary, paint it white. In fact, paint everything white! White reflects light and creates a neutral background canvas to experiment with colour in your fabrics and accessories.

More Paint. Yes, paint is your ally. Old wooden furniture, light fixtures, wicker items, chairs, tables, cast iron bed frames… you name it…paint it and give it a new life. If your walls and ceiling are white, try something with zip like warm red, chartreuse or sunny yellow.

HINT: Not a big fan of white walls? Try a soft blue, pale yellow or sea foam green – it will bring the beauty of the lake indoors.

rustic cottageFloors not Carpet. Hardwood is preferred – and it doesn’t need to be in perfect shape. (Actually, rugged looks better in a cottage!) Sometimes you can find reclaimed wood from an old building. Carpeting is just not practical – it’s hard to keep clean and sometimes absorbs “mouldy” odours during the winter months.

Furniture. In most cottages, space is at a premium, so you’ll need furniture that is small enough to fit comfortably, but flexible enough to accommodate all your summer guests. Bunk beds, beds with drawer storage underneath, day beds and pull out sofas all fit the bill.

Bunk BedsYou’ll want to invest in a good sofa. The cottage is all about relaxing after all. There are lots of smaller sized sofas these days as well as sectionals that offer plenty of seating on a compact footprint.Sectional

For additional storage, remember that chests of drawers work well in hallways, stairwells or tucked in any corner.Secretary Chest

Exposed Shelves or Bookcases. This is one of my favourite cottage looks. Instead of a series of cupboard doors, try installing exposed shelves or a rustic bookcase that showcase your pretty dishes. The beauty of it is that the dishes don’t all have to match or being “high end” – flea market finds and cups and saucers work well. For a more rustic look, add some baskets and antique pieces like wine casks or biscuit barrels. Coloured glass will look fantastic, especially if you’ve chosen a white theme for the background walls.book cases

Art. One of the biggest challenges is to find beautiful things to hang on the walls without spending a lot. An excellent choice is black and white photos. Have a day when the whole family gets involved in picture taking – then buy basic black frames with generous white mattes. It looks so sophisticated! Go to discount stores for the frames – they don’t need to cost much!

Hint: Another idea for a wall hanging is a beautiful quilt or tablecloth – especially nice in a stairwell or high ceiling area.

All Bottled Up. Glass jars are an inexpensive way to display pretty items. Mason jars, apothecary jars, even fish bowls. Use them to showcase simple treasures – sand, seashells, even wine corks, coloured buttons or marbles!

Bring the Outside In. Touches of nature make a cottage even more special. Wildflowers in an old jug, driftwood, beach rocks – and one of my favourites – twigs! Twist twigs into unexpected places like old light fixtures, around your mantel or in your flower displays. driftwood

However you choose to decorate your cottage, be safe and smile often this summer!
