Choosing an Environmentally-Friendly (and Ultra Comfortable!) Mattress

May 25, 2018 by Stoney Creek Furniture

When it’s time to buy a new mattress, there’s a lot to consider – size, durability, budget and of course, comfort. If you’re like most of us, you seldom think about the eco standards of your mattress. But it turns out, you definitely should! Many mattresses are made with synthetic fibres or foam, which don’t biodegrade. Stuffing is sometimes processed with pesticides and other chemicals that may potentially be cancer-causing. Considering that you spend a third of your life in bed, it’s time to add one more criterion to your mattress shopping list – is it environmentally-friendly?

Stoney Creek Furniture is dedicated to partnering with manufacturers that share our concern for the environment. With that in mind, we’re proud to carry Serta mattresses.

Where Style Meets Sustainability: Choosing Eco-friendly Furniture

May 17, 2018 by Stoney Creek Furniture

More than ever before, it’s important that we consider the environment when we purchase home furnishings. We have a responsibility to future generations to protect the environment – and choosing eco-friendly furniture is an excellent way to make a difference.

At Stoney Creek Furniture, being environmentally responsible is a top priority. It’s more than a mission statement – every day we look for new ways to minimize impact, conserve energy and reduce our footprint.

Here are some of our initiatives:

  • We partner with furniture manufacturers that produce eco-friendly furnishings, but more importantly, who also share our ‘big picture’ commitment and passion for preserving the environment.
  • We carry quality, timeless furnishings that are built to last and perform beautifully for years. Poor quality furniture quickly gets discarded and winds up littering our landfills.

May we share a quick story to illustrate that point? Just the other day, our Merchandise Manager, Lori, saw a poor quality bicast leather sofa, peeling and torn, on the side of the road to be picked up on garbage day. She wondered to herself if the owner regretted their purchase. It may have seemed like a good deal at the time – but did they really save? They must have had to replace it with something and did purchasing two sets add up to even more in the end? It likely did. And now here it was, deteriorated and discarded and heading to the landfill. Did they regret buying low quality versus a sofa that would still be used and enjoyed by their family? Quality furniture makes good sense for SO many reasons.

  • We recycle and bale packaging materials and are in the process of retrofitting our lighting at our stores, to use less electricity. Regarding deliveries, we use a computer routing system and zoned delivery areas to make the most efficient use of our trucks and fuel.
  • Giving back is a way of life at Stoney Creek Furniture – and when we can combine it with helping the environment, even better! If we receive an item from a manufacturer that is incorrect or perhaps received with a bit of damage, we add the item to our Giving Back Corner. All proceeds from the sale are donated to our local charities, including Hamilton Food Share, Food 4 Kids or the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA.

Now, here’s how you can do your part in choosing eco-friendly furnishings:

  • Choose high quality furniture that will last – perhaps even pass down to the next generation.
  • Choose furniture made from locally sourced wood that can easily be replenished without requiring international harvesting of precious woods.
  • Choose sustainable wood products from companies that can quickly replace harvested wood.
  • Consider furniture that’s been made from reclaimed sources.
  • Consider ordering furnishings that are made by our one of many domestic manufacturers. Something that is made close to home helps reduces our carbon footprint on our planet.

Handstone furniture is designed and handcrafted in Canada! One of the many benefits of this is that it’s produced with minimal impact on the environment.

Below are some of the eco-friendly furniture lines carried at Stoney Creek Furniture and their strategies for being environmentally responsible:

Brentwood Classics is a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, a non-profit association committed to promoting sustainable practices within the industry. All Brentwood products are made of foam that is CertiPUR-US® certified – made without ozone depleters, mercury, lead and other heavy metals and without any harmful flame retardant chemicals: CFCs, PBDEs, TDCPP (Tris) orformaldehyde. Brentwood has low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality. Brentwood products are performance-tested, durability-tested, emissions-tested and content-tested.

Handstone’s commitment to the environment is centered on building a durable product that lasts. They construct their furniture from solid wood, with dovetail drawers and a premium varnish finish. After construction, sawdust is recycled as livestock bedding and scrap wood is used to heat homes.

Stylus has made the following choices on all of its domestically made products:

Wood Supply

Frames are made from wood sourced through suppliers who are certified for environmentally sound practices, including the Forest Stewardship Council, CSA Sustainable Forest Management Standard and ISO 14001 Certified Environmental Management Systems.

Manufacturing

  • Recycling programs for paper, cardboard, plastic and foam waste.
  • Natural light skylights reduce energy needs.
  • Selective packaging saves on packaging materials for shipments that have less anticipated handling.
  • Efficient in-floor radiant heating is used to target areas where staff is less active, reducing the need to heat the entire production facility.

Foam Supply

  • From a zero-waste supply chain. Scraps are recycled into carpet underlay.
  • Chlorofluorocarbon free. Chlorofluorocarbons have been shown to deplete the ozone layer.
  • Blowing agents used in the manufacturing of foam is Methylene Chloride free.
  • Polybrominated diphenyl free, a fire retardant that is linked to cancer.

Stylus is committed to continual improvement in the environmental footprint we leave. This is just one of the things we love about this vendor.

Palliser is dedicated to embodying business practices that promote the long-term preservation and enhancement of natural resources, going beyond merely meeting regulatory requirements and striving for environmental leadership within the industry.

Stay tuned for next week when we focus on the importance of environmental responsibility in choosing a mattress – and what Serta is doing to help!

With your furnishings in place, what are some of the key trends in the garden this season?

Purple. Pantone’s colour of the year, Ultra Violet, is making its way to the garden, in beautiful plants and flowers (like campanula, iris, clematis, lavender and many more) and as an accent colour for cushions, throws and table top accessories.

Fireplaces. One of the hottest trends this season is a fireplace in the garden. Ask the experts at Stoney Creek Furniture about attractive, rust resistant propane fireplaces by Napoleon.

Vegetables. As we embrace a more plant-based diet, we’re growing more veggies in our gardens. How about trying kale and spinach this season? Did you know they can even be grown in planters?

Meditation Space. Dedicate a special corner of your outdoor living area to meditation. It can be as simple as a bench surrounded by plants and including a small table for candles and accessories. Facing the sunrise or sunset will make it particularly inspirational.

Planters. Have fun and be environmentally conscious with planters made from repurposed items. I’ve seen galvanized buckets, dresser drawers, chairs and even rubber boots as planters!

Accessories. As you would indoors, complete your outdoor living room with accessories like candles, centerpieces, lanterns and plants. Add string lights for night-time sparkle.

I can’t wait for summer! Our new Stoney Creek Furniture Outdoor collection is exclusive to our store in the GTA. Do come in and experience it today!

6 Steps to Choosing the Perfect Rug

April 25, 2018 by Stoney Creek Furniture

More and more homes today have wood or tiled floors instead of wall-to-wall carpeting. The look is definitely more natural and organic – and yet, don’t you sometimes crave the coziness of carpet? Area rugs are the answer. Beyond comfort, they also create abundant décor possibilities. But you have to select a rug carefully – the wrong rug can make a space feel awkward.

area rugs

When decorating a space, consider choosing your rug first. It becomes the palette foundation for the room.

Here are our 6 steps to choosing the ideal area rug every time:

    1. Style. What style is your home’s décor? Whether contemporary, traditional, modern or a more Bohemian vibe, choose a rug that suits the theme of the space for a harmonious look. For example, Persian and Oriental rugs are typically pattern-heavy and more classic, while a solid colour or geometric rug is definitely more modern. TIP: When decorating a space, consider choosing your rug first. It becomes the palette foundation for the room.
    2. Quality. Natural materials generally mean higher quality. Wool and silk are preferred, but some synthetics deliver excellent value and are better suited for high traffic areas. An obvious sign of quality is ensuring that the rug lays flat and evenly on the floor’s surface, without curling edges or uneven sides. Also check for colour vibrancy and integrity and other signs of quality including hand knotting and handmade details. Remember, handcrafted rugs age beautifully and will stand the test of time. TIP: Always use a pad under rugs to keep them in place and add comfort.
    3. Colour/Pattern. Start by looking at the tones in your floors, walls, furniture and anything else that’s staying in the room. If there’s already a lot of colour and pattern, you may want to choose a single-coloured rug, either a neutral or a shade which complements your existing décor. If you want a patterned rug with many hues, minimize the colours in your upholstery, curtains, etc.

      area rugs

Stoney Creek Furniture carries a variety of hand-crafted and hand-knotted area rugs.

    4. Texture. Your rug can create textural interest by contrasting it with other fabrics. For example, if your room has soft plush upholstery like velvet, a short pile rug or even sisal may look best; for a room with leather or simple fabrics, a longer, more luxurious pile is preferred.
    5. Size. In a living room, a rug should fit the size of the seating area, even if just the front legs of all the furniture pieces are on it (but a bigger rug is even better!). In the dining room, a good guideline is that the chairs should be able to be pulled back and still sit on the rug. In the bedroom, your feet should touch the rug when you get out of bed, with about 24 inches to spare on either side. A rug should always look generous versus skimpy.
    6. Layering. Two rugs side-by-side can be a great way to fill up a large space and add visual interest. Or, if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, try adding a rug on top of it for a totally new look. Finally, you can layer one rug on top of another – for example, a smaller patterned rug on top of a larger neutral rug like jute. Layering is fun and fresh!

Whether you’re redecorating a room from scratch or just want to add warmth and charm, consider adding a rug. Choose what you love and don’t be afraid to be adventurous! An area rug can singlehandedly make a room truly extraordinary. Stop by our Stoney Creek location to check out our selection of hand-crafted and hand-knotted area rugs today!
