If you’ve fallen in love with the rustic beauty and easy charm of farmhouse decor, relax, it appears it’s become a classic that’s here to stay. Whether you like true farmhouse styling or a hybrid style that includes industrial elements to add urban chic, here’s how to update your space to be 2018 ready.

Dark wood tones.

Woods are back for farmhouse decor in 2018, in rugged medium and dark shades. It’s a robust look, moving away from the all-white style that’s been popular in recent years (see more below). Not to worry though, blend a few wood pieces with the white furnishings you already have for an uncontrived, organic vibe that’s also on trend. Keep in mind that wood can be added in furnishings, but also in accessories and on floors and ceilings.

Cool woods.

Grey, distressed and raw woods are ultra popular for 2018 as are brown woods, always with a cool rather than a warm colour base. These tones beautifully complement the white elements you may already have!

Open storage.

Exposed shelves, hooks and racks have always been a style staple for farmhouse homes; in 2018 the trend expands to open storage. Mesh and wire baskets, wooden boxes and distressed crates are both practical and trendy. Use a mix of vintage and new, perhaps including recycled wooden product boxes for whimsy – and display them with pride!

Less white/neutral, more colour.

All-white decor is waving good-bye in 2018, even in farmhouse styling. Not that white and neutral decor isn’t still a go-to look for walls and foundation pieces, it’s just seeing an infusion of colour – bright pops of bold and jewel tone shades, plus warm, rich hues like brick red and terra cotta (which look incredibly in a rustic setting btw!).

Dark metallics.

Brass, copper and gold have made a huge comeback in recent seasons, along with a trend toward mixing metallics (stainless steel and nickel still look great too!). 2018 sees dark, muted, rugged metallics taking centre stage in farmhouse decor, including black, dark pipe metal grey and dark brown/rust. These metal tones are perfect for cabinet hardware, door handles, faucets, etc. and are popular accents on furnishings in combination with wood.

Farmhouse decor is wonderfully laid back and comfortable. There are no strict rules to follow, so it’s easy to rejuvenate your farmhouse space for 2018. With a few small changes/additions, you’re ready to take on the new year in style!
