How to Bring Cottage Style to Your City Home

Do you love the comfort and charm of cottage décor? One of the most popular trends now is rustic – not the country style of years past, but a new look that’s surprisingly elegant and city appropriate. Classic rustic furniture and the cottage style are extremely popular now in urban homes. How can you add rustic beauty to your home? Blending and moderation are the secrets. Contemporary and transitional décor paired with rustic touches is visually interesting and aesthetically pleasing – but balance is critical. You don’t want your home to be folksy, just wonderfully eclectic. Here are some suggestions to inspire you:

Accessories. It’s easy to add country charm without a big investment. Think cool rather than cute; rugged rather than quaint. This wall hanging of galloping horses fits the bill, as does this metal airplane. They are sophisticated yet decidedly country. Another great way to add country appeal is through linens. Plaid cushions and quilts rather than bedspreads, for example.

Colour. Certain colours and combinations are traditionally associated with country – like blue and white, sunny yellow and watermelon red. Choose accent walls or accessories in these shades. Fresh colours like chartreuse and pastel blues and greens also work wonderfully.

Vintage. Antiques and vintage items are synonymous with rustic décor. Antique collectibles, particularly glassware, china, earthenware and pottery – or even old tools, butter boxes, utensils, etc. – all make great displays.

Furniture. Adding rustic pieces to your home has never been easier – there’s a great selection available in distressed, weathered and painted options. A few of my favourites are featured here – like this gorgeous daybed in distressed grey. What a perfect addition to a guest room or a for a child’s room. I also love this armoire in gentle blue and soft white. It would be an ideal focal point in a family room, hallway or even breakfast area. Or how about this fabulous credenza – rustic yet functional at the same time.

Natural. Contrived is counter intuitive to country, so choose fabrics and materials that reflect nature – woods versus plastics, linen versus polyester, real plants versus silks. Handcrafted items (or those that look handcrafted) also suit well.

Repurposing. There’s a common sense practicality to country décor. Convert a weathered trunk to a coffee table, replace glass with mirror in an old window or repaint an old dresser in sophisticated black as a centrepiece in your entranceway.

Wood Walls and Floors. Have a look at the wood panelled accent wall featured in our Vaughan store in the photo above. It was a fairly easy DIY project. Wood panelled walls are making a big comeback. Be daring in a diagonal pattern and by mixing wood types. Wood floors are, of course, a country staple. Purchase previously used floors for rugged beauty.

The rustic look in a city home is all about embracing contrast. Whatever your current style, add rustic discriminately and anchor everything in common colour schemes, proportions or finishes. The overall look should be eclectic yet cohesive.
