Family Dining: Creating the Space, Making the Time

Family dining has changed so much over the last couple of decades. When I was a kid, as I’m sure it was with many of you, dinner was a sit-down meal at the same time every night with the whole family present. No discussion – that’s simply the way it was. Wonderful memories!

New home designs, new dining options

Today, our lives are different. Both parents work and children have endless activities around dinner time – soccer, dance classes – and homework too! In fact, all our mealtimes have changed and our homes are changing to accommodate that.

Where does your family like to eat? If you’re like most of us, the kitchen is the hub of the household. Homes are being designed with bigger eat-in kitchens and open concepts that incorporate a family room. It works beautifully. You can prepare a meal while still enjoying time with the kids – and then serve it right there. It’s casual, comfortable and easy!

There is a huge array of furniture available to suit your kitchen size and decor. Maybe you have space for a big country style harvest table and chairs; or perhaps bench seating works for you. Even if you only have a tiny area, you’d be surprised at your options! Furniture is flexible these days with designs to suit every lifestyle. Consider a breakfast nook. A junior dining set – even a 2-seat option – can be very convenient in the morning for a smaller family that’s rushing to grab a quick bite!

The pleasure of a real dining room

If you have a separate dining room, enjoy it! It doesn’t have to be fancy or formal, although it can be! There are traditional, contemporary and country options available and all points in between. You can choose to have a buffet and hutch, a sideboard or just a table and chairs. There truly is something for every budget and every preference. Lots of people choose to mix and match for a fun, eclectic look.

Dining rooms are meant to be used! Don’t wait for a special event. Enjoy dinner for 2 there occasionally. Break out the candles. Dust off the real crystal. You don’t have to do it every day, but find the time to celebrate sitting down together and savouring a good meal and good conversation. Your kids may actually enjoy it too (although they probably won’t admit it!).

Family first

Wherever you choose to eat in your home, the important thing is spending time together as a family. It turns out that bonding and connecting time is critical. In recent studies, family dinner has been shown to be effective in addressing many challenges ranging from childhood obesity to risky behaviors in teens to self-esteem issues to adolescent depression. It’s that important! So juggle the schedule and bring your family together for dinner as often as you can. Turn off the TV and just talk…
