Trend Report from the Spring 2013 High Point Furniture Market

We recently returned from North Carolina where we attended the High Point Furniture Market – the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world. It happens twice a year, with over 11 million square feet of furniture and accessories on display. We walked and saw so much – it was very inspiring. Here are some of the trends that caught our attention – and some will be coming to our store in the months ahead.

Fabric – Pretty and luxurious is back! Think French elegance.

  • Look for embroidery on fabrics, upholstery, linens, etc. These statement accents give a one-of-a-kind feeling to pieces.
  • Bold and bright patterns. Bold geometrics captured our attention. What a great way to add drama!
  • Nothing subtle about colour this season! Blue is everywhere along with purple, fuchsia and orange. Choose accessories in these vibrant shades or even a signature piece like a chair or loveseat.
  • Look for glazed linen and raw silks; simply the height of luxury. Why not indulge in something truly beautiful?
  • Tufts on fabric and leather add a feeling of plenty and abundance – so classic!southern Tufted Bed - Jessica McClintock southern

Styles and Eras – Variety, variety, variety!

  • Flea Market Chic and the Recycled look are very popular. You’ll see tables, chests and accent pieces made from recycled woods, metals and natural elements like shell marquetry.
  • Neo-classical furniture styles are also a hot trend. Think 18th century sensibility like Louis XVI with sharp angles and straight lines or the Empire style, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship with details like gilded bronze mounts and embellishments.
  • Art-Deco – There’s a hint of art-deco in the air – an exciting style blend of craft and technology. Lavish ornamentation, rich colours and bold shapes are cropping up everywhere!
  • Global influence – Spanish, African, tribal – it’s an eclectic look that embraces diversity.
  • Vintage meets Industrial. These opposites are being brought together to create interesting, stunning spaces. Picture a modern loft with contemporary furnishings and the juxtaposition of a velvet settee.

Finishes – Contemporary and classic.

  • Brushed gold is so popular!  Look for it on table bases, chairs, lighting, mirrors, etc. It’s a rich, opulent look.
  • Watch for wood furniture with metal details and finishings. Brushed gold, silver and other metals that add polish and a hint of glamour.
  • Painted finishes on statement and accent pieces create gorgeous focal points in any room.
  • Smokey grey wood finishes were incredibly popular at Market. They look perfect when combined with flea market chic pieces.Lauerl H 5 copy

Shapes and Sizes

  • Smaller scaled furniture continues to be a staple offering as many people choose smaller homes and condos.
  • Honeycombs are on trend in table bases, design elements and lighting.
  • Bars are back! Nowadays subtle is the style with small modern chests that open to reveal a bar with all the accoutrements.

And to summarize all of this, here is what our Buyer, Lori Negrinotti has to say:

“This season, contrast is the key word in furniture trends. It’s flea market chic paired with classical style; it’s ‘crafty’ accessories mixed with sumptuous raw silk linens; it’s the simplicity of contemporary against the luxury of gold-embossed pieces. It adds up to a wonderfully eclectic interplay and an overall feeling of abundance, comfort and living well.”

We can’t wait until some of these beautiful furnishings and accessories start arriving at our store so you can incorporate these trends into your home. Be sure to stop by regularly to see what is new!
