How to Personalize Your Home Office for Fun and Function

For most of us, September signals new beginnings – back-to-school, the start of crisp, cool mornings and the excitement of a new season ahead. I confess, I am still drawn to the bright back-to-school store displays and indulge in new supplies for my office every September. Binders, pens, markers – it’s tough to resist! Are you like me? This year, let’s go a step further. How about redecorating your home office or your family study space?  Here are a few of our favourite ideas to make it one-of-a-kind:

It’s All about the Desk!

At the heart of any office or study space is the desk. There’s no limit to your options – executive double pedestal desks, traditional French Provincial or Queen Anne styling, contemporary desks with rugged finishes, L-shaped ultra spacious desks, farmhouse styles, even small schoolhouse desks. Choose one you love and most importantly, that fits your needs. HINT: A dining room table can also make an amazing desk if you want lots and lots of space!

Vintage Details.

Whatever your office space style, vintage accessories add character and interest. I love antique typewriters – what about you? Vintage cameras, antique books, a 1940s telephone, an old banker’s lamp – these details make an office your very own.

Accent Chairs.

If you have the space, add a spectacular accent chair to your office. It’s ideal for a visitor or for contemplation, away from the distractions at your work station. Choose a classic leather wing back chair, a vivid blue club chair or a glamourous velvet tufted chair.

We typically think of offices in classic neutrals, but to make it your unique space, add vivid pops of your favourite colour in accent furniture, accessories, draperies or storage bins/baskets. Teal, fuchsia and jewel green are all trendy this season.

Think outside the Cabinet.

Don’t limit your storage choices to a filing cabinet. Repurposing is a popular alternative. Consider a credenza or sideboard – there are so many contemporary and traditional styles available with ample storage options. Make it the focal point of your office.

An office doesn’t have to be all work and no play. Personalize it with a gallery wall – how about a selection of clocks or a framed collection of favourite vintage advertisements? Maybe a display of black and white pet pictures? Throughout your office, leave space to showcase the things you love. They will inspire you.
