Timeless Sophistication: How to Decorate with Black

Black is classic, whether it’s for fashion or for the home. But many of us hesitate to use black in our homes thinking it will too dark or macabre even. The truth is, used judiciously; black can even brighten a space! So with Halloween upon us, here’s how to inject some dramatic black into your space (cats and witches excepted!):

Black walls. Yes, really! An accent wall in black, even an entire room, can be exciting and glamourous. (And contrary to myth, it will not make the room look smaller.) Black is a beautiful neutral background for lots of bright and bold art, furniture, flooring and light fixtures. Make sure there’s plenty of natural lighting. Colours that pop against black include pink, emerald green, coral and aqua. HINT: Try one of these bright colours on your ceiling with white trim!

Black trim and frames. One of the most subtle ways to bring black into your space is in framing. Whether it’s black frames on your photos and artwork or black trim on your baseboards and cornices, black defines beautifully.

Black metal. This look is very trendy right now – often in unexpected elements like faucets and chandeliers. Black cast iron and wrought iron are more traditional but in a contemporary space are fresh and fun. Bring a wrought iron gate inside and paint it black or transform a vintage cast iron bed with glossy black paint.

Black furniture. Both sensual and smart, black presents itself beautifully in leather sofas, accent chairs (perhaps with bright upholstery), dining room tables, armoires or hall tables. Too much black furniture can be funereal, so be sure to mix it with some colour or wood finishes. Try a light shag rug on the floor as a point of contrast and to add texture. (Ivory and light tan look ultra chic with black.)

Black doors. We love a black front door. Make it glossy please! A black door is always in style and immediately tells visitors that this home has style! In fact, black doors throughout the inside of a home look classy, and practically speaking, stand up better to handprints and dirt better than white.

Black patterns. Stripes or geometrics are a contemporary choice for black patterns, but don’t forget toile or florals for a more feminine approach.

Black with mirrors. To illuminate a room with black, use lots of mirrors. They will reflect light and open the space. Metal trimmed mirrors in brass, nickel or silver are especially apropos. HINT: Glass and crystal will also reflect light. Consider a crystal chandelier, a glass coffee table or glass bric a brac in trendy bright colours.

Black mix and match. One of the best things about black is that it’s perfect for mixing styles and periods, unified by the colour. How about 6 different black chairs at your dining table? Or 2 different nightstands in black on either side of your bed? Or a grouping of ‘random’ accessories you love, all in black? Experiment!
