Kids’ Rooms & Furniture – Making it Fun and Fresh

Can you believe that it’s back to school time already?! It’s always been my favourite time of year. Fall is the perfect time for fresh starts (i.e. fall fashion!) and refocusing after a long and lovely summer.

For our kids, back to school means back to friends and classes – and to homework! As parents, we invest so much effort and money in making sure that our children have the very best school supplies – but what about their study area? Having a cool and comfortable bedroom can be inspirational and motivational.

Pointers to Create a Child’s Room that has Function and Flair

Don’t go overboard on a theme. A few themed items are great but resist too much of a good thing. One themed focal piece and some accessories are usually enough – mix with soothing neutrals for balance.

Focus on sleep, storage, study and play. Your child’s room serves many roles and that can mean too much stuff! It can actually confuse rather than inspire. Do your best to minimize clutter. Backs of doors and ceiling hangers can work wonders. Make sure play space and study space are inviting.

Buy sensible fabrics. Silks, linens and nylons won’t wear well with heavy usage and they don’t resist spills and stains. Choose durable, easy-care fabrics such as denim, cotton and canvas. Look for tightly woven fabrics which are stronger and last longer.

Protect your walls. To reduce handprints and smudges, choose wall paints with a satin finish. Some paints have a scrubbable finish which is great in high-traffic areas. Installing wainscoting can help reduce damage to walls too. And most importantly…

Choose quality. Quality means durability and that means kid friendly. When you choose solid, well built basics, especially in furniture, they will grow with your child. You and your child can be proud of their bedroom!

Trends Today

Gone are the days of matchy-matchy furniture for kids’ rooms. Today, a child’s room can be as stylish and sophisticated as any room in the house – without breaking the budget. Kids’ furniture is often modern and sleek, or even with a touch of unexpected whimsy.

There are some amazing designers that specialize in kids’ furniture. They are on the pulse of what children want and need in furniture: form, function and fun.  I think you’ll be surprised at just how far we’ve come from brown bunk beds and dull desks! Imagination rules (and no, you won’t have to break the bank!)
