Tips on how to choose the right mattress for you

More and more experts are saying that your mattress is the key to good rest. And by now, we’ve all heard the many health benefits of sleeping soundly: lower stress levels, controlled blood pressure, boosted immunity, less stiffness and reduced insomnia.

We’ve talked about mattresses in this blog before – but with so much riding on your sleep well being, let’s look a little closer at the different types of mattresses. With so many to choose from, it’s great to be armed with lots of information before you begin shopping!

COIL

perfect sleeperThe most popular mattress type is the tried and true innerspring. They support you with coil springs, with the coils individually enclosed for comfort and durability. There’s a great variety of materials available on top of the coils – from pillow top to latex to memory foam. The choice is yours; whatever you find most comfortable. There’s no rule that says firmer is always better for you by the way, but studies have shown that people with lower back issues fare better with a firmer mattress; something to keep in mind when you’re “trying on” in the stores.

Another thing to note is that more coils don’t always mean more comfort. You will certainly pay more, but many experts say 390 coils is a good choice. If you go lower you may not be supported well, but going over this number likely won’t bring a noticeable improvement.

The best thing about coil mattresses? There’s a huge variety and you’re sure to find one that works well for you at an affordable price.

SertaPerfect Sleeper is designed with a set of unique features to help address not just one issue, but 5 common sleep and mattress issues that people face every night:

1. Tossing and turning

2. Lack of support, leading to back pain

3. Sleeping too hot or too cold

4. Partner disturbance

5. Mattress roll-off or sag

MEMORY FOAM

iComfortMemory foam mattresses are made of layers of different densities of foam that respond to weight and temperature. Known for comfort, they are becoming more and more popular. How do they work? The foam literally contours to the specific shape of your body as you sleep, absorbing movement and supporting you as your weight shifts. This reduces pressure points and many say, reduces pain. Your partner will be happy too – there’s less disturbance from tossing and turning because of the absorption factor. If you have frequent muscle pain, memory foam (mattress or topper) may be a good choice for you.

Are there any drawbacks? Some say that memory foam gets very hot during the night – it’s temperature sensitive by design, made to change shape with your body heat.  There are brands, however, that help you sleep cool.

The iComfort Sleep System by Serta is made with Cool Action Gel Memory Foam. It is the world’s first memory foam mattress infused with the support and cooling touch of Serta’s exclusive MicroSupport gel.

LATEX

Pure Latex Lifestyle-Coffee-1Latex is the “new kid on the block” in mattresses, but quickly gaining popularity. Made from either natural or synthetic rubber, latex provides a very firm, bouncy support that is uniform throughout the bed. Latex is very supportive, but unlike memory foam, you don’t sink in, you rest on top. It pushes back for excellent muscle relaxation.

Many experts say it’s their favourite – for comfort and support. The only drawback is if you don’t like to sleep on a very firm mattress, latex may not be the ultimate in comfort. If you’re looking for pain relief and exceptional support, however, latex may be your best option.  You can choose a latex mattress or topper.

The Pure LatexBLISS mattress provides uplifting support that enables your muscles to relax. Rather than sleeping in a mattress, you sleep on it – like floating or being suspended. The round cell structure of the Talalay Latex rubber in a Pure LatexBLISS mattress allows your body to be lifted to the surface of the bed, relieving pressure, whatever position you sleep in. Full relaxation is the result.

OTHERS

Air Mattresses are similar to a coil mattress but use air filled chambers instead of coils. A foam layer on top adds comfort. They are adjustable for firmness, which is great for couples with different needs.

Adjustable Beds are ideal for people with trouble getting in and out of bed, with sleep apnea or acid reflux or who simply like to watch TV in bed. The bed bends at varying angles for convenience.

As you can see, you have lots of mattress choices. Ultimately, it comes down to comfort. You want to sleep soundly and wake up refreshed and invigorated. Pleasant dreams!
