Spring Cleaning Tips for Furniture, Upholstery and More

April 1, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Spring is the one time of year that I really don’t mind house cleaning. Perhaps that’s because spring cleaning makes way for warmer weather and the sunny season ahead. Here are some of our favourite spring cleaning tips to handle all sorts of jobs around your home:

Leather Furniture. Start with a thorough vacuuming. Leather is often treated and can be cleaned with mild soap (like a facial soap) and warm water – but never scrubbed. Check with your furniture retailer first. They can recommend appropriate cleaners/polishes.

Upholstered Furniture. Again, a thorough vacuuming may be all you need. Remove the cushions and get into every nook and cranny. If you have stains, start with soapy water. If you must use cleansers, test on a hidden corner first.

Wood Furniture. While you dust regularly, spring cleaning is an opportunity to freshen up the details. For example, clean furniture legs and use a soft toothbrush to get into ornamental patterns and around handles/hardware. Always go easy on spray polishes and never use wet cloths to clean wood. Ask your furniture retailer how to handle a tough cleaning job.

Draperies. They may need to go to the dry cleaners, or perhaps just in your laundry. Spring is also the time to take down curtains altogether and enjoy the freshness of light cotton panels or sheers.

Mattresses. Yes, it’s time to flip and/or rotate your mattress. It’s also the time to give it a complete vacuuming, getting into any crevices. Spot clean any stains with a damp (never wet) cloth and soap.

Bed Linens. Of course you clean your sheets often – but now’s the time to clean the duvet/bedspread, shams, bed skirt and pillows. Don’t assume they need to go to the dry cleaners. Read your labels. Many can be done in a washing machine.

Appliances. Soapy warm water is ideal to clean the inside of your fridge. For inside your dishwasher, place one cup of plain white distilled vinegar in a container on the bottom rack and a half-cup of baking soda into a dish on the top rack. Run the dishwasher and let it sit closed. Baking soda and vinegar also work for inside your oven. Do your research!

A few additional spring cleaning tips:

  • Clean windows both inside and out. Outside is much more difficult, but that’s where winter really leaves its mark.
  • Clean green. Investigate green options before you spend a lot of money on cleansers. They are safer and just as effective. Much of your cleaning can be handled naturally with baking soda, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and essentials oils like tea tree and lavender.
  • Don’t forget the door! When you’re cleaning your front stoop, clean the door and doorknob – they accumulate dirt during the winter.
  • Work from the top down. Start upstairs when cleaning and make your way to your home’s lower levels. Dust settles downward. Similarly, dust furniture before you vacuum.

How to Choose and Make the Most of Art in Your Home

March 24, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

There is a German proverb that says ‘Art holds fast when all else is lost.’ How beautiful and how true! Art brings great joy to our senses and our lives – as it should to our homes. With that said, here are some suggestions to help you choose art, hang and fully enjoy art in your space.

View art as more than an accessory. Many of us think of art as an afterthought – simply a way to accent our walls. And while it does this wonderfully, it’s also so much more. Art is a means to unify your décor, and make a strong style statement. Use its power to create a truly magical environment.

Open your mind to what you define as art. Art is so much more than paintings on a wall. Photographs, three dimensional wall sculptures, quilts, mirrors, antique doors or windows, even a pair of weather worn boat oars all qualify as art if displayed with just right.

Love it or leave it! As with furnishings, buy only art that you absolutely love. In many cases it’s an investment that you will have in your home for many years. Even if inexpensive, artwork should make you feel good every time you see it.

Make sure the proportions are right. Bigger is often better with art, especially if you envision it as a focal point in your room. But don’t go overboard! Art above a sofa or bed, for example, should never extend beyond the width of the furnishings.

Choose colours that work. Art purists often say that matching your décor doesn’t matter when choosing  art; but if you want your art to blend, do choose something with complementary colours or one or two touches of colour that are derived from your décor.

Consider groupings. You don’t always have to buy one big piece of art. Create groupings by theme (all florals for example), colour scheme (all black and white) or even framed the same (all nickel frames with white mattes) to create unity.

Individuality. Don’t be afraid to express your individuality when choosing art. Hang art that reflect your interests, culture, travel experiences, etc. – it’s your home after all!

Shop around. Stores and galleries provide a huge and diverse selection, whether you’re looking for original art, limited editions or simply something beautiful to brighten your space. But also consider local less-known artists. There are often small art shows or even sidewalk artists with amazing work.

Hang art correctly. Hang art at eye level, never, ever too high! 60 – 65” from the floor to the middle of the piece is about right.

Stay on theme – or DON’T! Yes, you can match your art style to your home style – landscapes in a traditional home or abstract art in a contemporary home for example. But if you enjoy being adventurous, choose the opposite and revel in the contrast.

Vintage Casual Defined and Integrated in Your Home

March 18, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Vintage Casual décor is as welcoming and warm as it sounds. It’s a home style borne of our increasing desire to mix periods, themes and finishes, while still keeping our homes harmonious and calm. Vintage Casual beautifully bridges old and new, formal and laidback, structured and spontaneous. The effect is controlled but never stuffy, elegant but never contrived. Vintage Casual spaces pay tribute to antique looks yet you’ll find contemporary twists too. The overriding theme?  Comfort and a feeling of richness and abundance.

Classic Vintage Casual trademarks include:

  • Typically lighter wood or paint finishes – if darker, often distressed
  • Elegant chairs and sofas – but never stiff
  • Straight or slightly curved legs or club/ball bases
  • Some metallics but never too much bling
  • An air of solidity – furnishings should exudes lasting quality

Many of us who choose Vintage Casual do so because we love the inherent contrast. We love to mix styles but still yearn for cohesive looks and sophistication.

Here are some tips to blend Vintage Casual pieces with your antiques, contemporary or traditional furnishings:

  1. Use pieces in unexpected ways and places. There’s something wonderful about a wardrobe used as an entertainment centre, a bedroom dresser as a hall table or a gorgeous secretary as a bar service. It speaks to openness and easy living, hallmarks of Vintage Casual.
  2. Meet your BFF, paint. Whether crisp white, chic black or a jolt of bright colour, paint is an instant unifier, bringing together pieces from different eras and styles. Paint and/or re-upholster an old piece you were ready to abandon.
  3. Blend styles within a furniture grouping. Juxtaposition of modern and vintage is at its most appealing when paired in a grouping – a modern black dining table with traditional, tufted armchairs, a wooden roll top desk with an acrylic chair or a floral fabric headboard with streamlined dressers.
  4. Vintage Casual shines against a neutral backdrop. Neutrals make it easy to blend disparate styles. Stick with white, grey, taupe, beige and ivory on your walls and ceilings, letting the many variations in your furniture take centre stage.
  5. Anchor styles with wood details. There’s nothing like the beauty of wooden architectural details to give a home substance and provide a glorious backdrop for mixed styles. Ceiling beams, reclaimed floors, cornices, wainscoting – traditional or rustic – either way, the effect is stunning.
  6. Easy accessories. Create contrast that invites mix and match with simple additions – a crisp modern lampshade on a vintage base, modern pillows on a traditionally-styled sofa or an antique white pitcher on a sleek metallic hall table.

Spring Décor Ideas

Like any special holiday, Easter stirs our décor imagination. There is no shortage of inspiration everywhere you look. Must-dos are fresh spring flowers like tulips in abundance in your home, gorgeous green plants to usher in the season and a welcoming wreath on your front door. As well as the usual whimsy with bunny ornaments and painted eggs! But beyond the expected, here are a few ideas that will help welcome Easter and get your home Spring ready.

Fresh Sheers. Take down heavier draperies and replace them with sheers – sure, white and ivory are classic – but consider subtle pastels that give your room a glow. You’ll find options in pink, mauve, palest green and light blue with just a wash of on-trend colour.

Fragrant Candles. After a cold winter of enjoying rich substantial scents, go light with citrus and soft florals like gardenia and lily of the valley.

Pretty Pillows. The tried and true throw cushion never lets us down to update affordably! This season is no different. Gather a new collection made of cotton and linen, clothed in nautical stripes, plain pastels, geometrics or popular soft denim. Keep the colours muted, gentle, even distressed.

Vibrant Vases. Big, bold vases are trendy in metallics and no surprise – pastels. Try filling them with wonderful twigs and branches to create contrast.

Floral Fun. This season, floral patterns are bolder, brighter and often on a dark background, yet they’re unmistakably spring-infused. Add touches with floral upholstery on a piece of accent furniture, a floral wall hanging framed in white mattes and frame, floral bed coverings or floral Easter table linens.

Don’t miss our Easter Egg-Stravaganza and the fun of getting your home Spring ready!
