Transitional Style Home Decor

March 4, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Transitional style is by far the most popular in home decor. Pick up any home magazine and most of the spaces you see featured are transitional, yet many of us don’t even know what defines it! Let’s start with that. Transitional decor is a blend of traditional and contemporary styles, incorporating old world elements with modern, clean lines – it’s uncomplicated and relaxing, yet still sophisticated. Transitional is neither masculine nor feminine, so you’ll see nothing frilly or pretty; nor will you see rugged or especially bold. The emphasis is on easy living, comfort and timeless beauty.

A broad spectrum encompasses transitional, but certain must-dos prevail:

  • Simplicity – leans toward minimalist with few accessories, unobtrusive styling, no loud or heavy ornamentation
  • Neutral colouring – a wide range of beiges, grays and taupes
  • A focus on texture – fabrics like sisal, jute, corduroy, chenille, velvet and nubby silks
  • Plain window coverings – no bows or balloons, just simple panels or Roman blinds
  • Classic furnishings – clean lines, perhaps a touch of curve, lots of dark woods; never small or dainty, typically generous for an inviting look

Some of you may feel those parameters are a little limiting. You love the overall look of transitional, but need more room for individuality. Here are some tips where you can still achieve the classic conservatism of transitional, but make it your own.

Pastels. Yes, you can include pastels, a very hip trend right now. Go for muted pastels with beige undertones; stick to warm rather than cool hues. And of course, use in moderation.

Brights. You can also integrate brights, but again, very moderately. Try a bright shade in some accessories like throw pillows or a statement vase, or perhaps in a large piece of abstract art.

Black. Transitional relies on dark browns and caramels for contrast, but black works just as well and is ultra chic. Use judiciously – the motto of transitional

Furniture. Transitional furniture is subtle but still fabulous! Look for wood accents on sofas and accent chairs, a touch of tufting and consider elements of glass and chrome, perhaps on a coffee or end table. Be sure the aesthetic is streamlined and leans toward elegant.

Metallic. Why not? Keep your metallics limited and choose muted golds or my choice, pewter or nickel.

Statement Pieces. Transitional welcomes larger statement furnishings as long as they are clean-lined and never fussy. In fact, substance is integral to the look and adds a feeling of sumptuousness. Have a little fun with a beautiful armoire in a bright colour or a hall table with gold accents.

Pretty Decor: Tips to Create a Soft, Sophisticated Space

February 26, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

One of the hottest trends this year is pretty decor – and it’s about time! While contemporary styling is chic, a nod to femininity adds comfort, sensuality and warmth. It’s beautiful, often glamorous and a touch romantic. Unlike the ruffled looks of years past, pretty now is subtle and even sleek. It’s the perfect way to beat the winter blahs and give spring a head start. So let’s begin!

Tip #1: Go Easy. Moderation is the key. Keep the space grounded with neutral walls and floors. Perhaps limit yourself to a few accent furnishings or accessories in the pretty theme.

Tip #2: Think Pink. Today’s pink isn’t candy sweet, it’s blush-toned or beige-infused or fuchsia-bright. Upholstery, draperies, linens, and even leathers, are all showing up in gorgeous shades of pink.

Tip #3: Tufting Trend. Tufting is ultra popular in chairs, sofas, benches, ottomans and pillows. And while it certainly adds a dash of pretty, it’s also a timelessly masculine accent, often used in leather study chairs. Add a tufted piece in any fabric or style – it’s wonderful classic.

Tip #4: Pillow Talk. An abundance of throw cushions adds prettiness and coziness. It’s perhaps the quickest and most affordable way to bring a feminine sensibility to a room. The variety of cushions available is huge – mix it up! Nature-inspired, fur-covered, velvet, geometrics, florals, and even needlepoint.

Tip #5: Fun with Florals. Quintessentially feminine, florals today are dramatic, bold and fun and often against dark backgrounds. Mix and match patterns for extra impact.

Tip #6: Mirror, Mirror. Every shape and size of mirror is popular now – and they all add an element of pretty! Consider a gold gilded, nickel trimmed or white framed mirror in a round, rectangular or starburst shape. Create a grouping of smaller mirrors for instant elegance.

Tip #7: Pretty Pastels. Inspired by Pantone’s colour combo of the year, Rose Quartz & Serenity, all shades of pastels are trendy this season. Try pale blue, lilac, soft green, palest yellow – think outside the box and consider furnishings or rugs in pastels.

Tip #8: White is Right. White aesthetically blends with pretty décor. Infuse your space with lots of soft whites, greys and beiges; they work wonderfully with pastels. Consider an all-white kitchen with wood floors – pretty yet still polished.

Tip #9: Wonderful Wallpaper. Bold florals are definitely in as are metallics and geometrics. A wallpapered powder room or a foyer can be spectacularly pretty – or an accent wall in any area. Be sure to anchor it with clean-lined furnishings and neutral classics.

Tip #10: Add Whimsy. There’s plenty of room for fun in pretty décor. Look for items that reflect your personality, display a collection or hang whimsical art. Create a space that’s uniquely yours.

Contemporary design has changed in the recent years. Once the domain of the strict minimalist, today’s contemporary spaces are wonderfully welcoming and laid-back. Yet there’s still a sense of serenity and sophistication in contemporary homes that no other design style expresses so succinctly. It’s a breath of fresh air – the freedom of uncluttered, uncomplicated simplicity.

The Features of Today’s Contemporary Design

Contemporary design is pared down, geometric based and angular. Lines are clean and straight; curves and ornamentation are little to non-existent. In contemporary styling, structure, materials and architecture determine the look, rather than relying on fanciful additions or vivid colour. While yesterday’s contemporary was defined by hard edges, today there is a trace of softness, creating a casual atmosphere that invites families and friends to relax and enjoy. And yet, the utter simplicity remains…

How to Keep Contemporary Warm and Inviting

While purists may insist on contemporary without compromise, most of us desire a contemporary home that is streamlined but still gracious and comfortable. Consider these ideas to make your contemporary space as pleasant as it is chic:

Add Texture. A variety of textures keeps contemporary décor interesting and attractive. Generate warmth with rich fabrics like velvet, a touch of rattan, gleaming hardwood floors, silk draperies and thick shag rugs, for example.

Accent with Colour. Contemporary design relies on neutral, monochromatic palettes as a key foundation for simplicity – plus, they are very soothing and calming. That said, today’s contemporary embraces a hint of colour to make the space more appealing and exciting. Think warm colours like rosy pink, coral, gentle yellow, soft brown, sea green and turquoise. It takes very little to make a big impact –consider cushions, a throw, an ottoman, a piece of art, etc.

Mix and Match. An interplay of different materials enhances a contemporary aesthetic dramatically. Imagine a leather sofa against a marble floor; a distressed wood table in a stainless steel kitchen – mix hard and soft and smooth and rugged for beautiful contrast.

Let Light in. There’s nothing like pure sunshine to warm a space! Keep window treatments minimal to let maximum light in, but frame your windows with sumptuous yet unfussy draperies. If your view is forest, garden or water, even better.

Include Greenery. Bring nature inside for instant charm and warmth. Contemporary spaces are ideal for real foliage and large treelike plants. Perhaps even try your hand at a creating a terrarium.

Eclectic and Rustic Decor

Today there’s a trend toward combining eclectic and rustic decor for a look that’s definitely unique: a touch industrial, very urban and decidedly sophisticated. But undoubtedly it remains true to the roots of both its components – uncompromised comfort, uncomplicated design and mixing pieces you love for a one-of-a-kind space.

Eclectic has been a fun and fresh design trend for some time. Eclectic celebrates uniqueness, adventure, openness – it’s all about creating a home on your terms with furnishings, accents and palettes that you adore. Many decor themes combine in eclectic – across the spectrum from traditional to modern and everything in between.

Rustic decor is grounded in the same informality as eclectic. It too invites easy living, comfort and relaxed rules. Materials are natural, woods are distressed and designs are simple and unfussy. There’s a ruggedness about rustic that is reminiscent of country decor, but always with a chic, modern twist.

Meet Epicenters
At the forefront of rustic-eclectic decor is the Epicenters collection. Inspired by art, design and music, you’ll see a strong cultural influence at the heart of these pieces. Rustic features prominently in Epicenters, but mid-century modern, industrial and urban styling also shine though. Hip, even a little funky, Epicenters invites the beauty of art into our homes through truly unique furnishings.

How can you incorporate rustic and eclectic decor into your home? Here are a few pointers:

Accents. A few small pieces of eclectic/rustic furniture and accessories are enough to create the look, without changing your current style. Remember, the very nature of eclectic is that everything doesn’t match perfectly; but do aim for additions that blend in terms of colour and proportion.

Focal Point. Go the opposite of the suggestion above and add one focal piece to a room in the rustic/eclectic style. Go larger and impressive – perhaps a gorgeous bed or a unique chest.

Neutral Background. To pull off a diverse style blend, keep your background neutral to ground the space. For example, choose grey or taupe walls with neutral window coverings; select carpets with minimal pattern. Soft white is hot this season and makes a perfect backdrop for a rustic/eclectic space.

Natural Influences. Natural elements are intrinsic to rustic decor, but also work well with eclectic. Think wood floors, exposed brick, wood beams and windows with sheer coverings. Metallics like stainless steel, iron, etc. also create the right atmosphere.

One Palette. To integrate multiple styles, stay true to one palette – various shades of course – but don’t introduce too many colours. With so much variety in your décor style, keep the colour scheme simple to ensure harmony.
