How to Bring Cottage Style to Your City Home

June 24, 2015 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Do you love the comfort and charm of cottage décor? One of the most popular trends now is rustic – not the country style of years past, but a new look that’s surprisingly elegant and city appropriate. Classic rustic furniture and the cottage style are extremely popular now in urban homes. How can you add rustic beauty to your home? Blending and moderation are the secrets. Contemporary and transitional décor paired with rustic touches is visually interesting and aesthetically pleasing – but balance is critical. You don’t want your home to be folksy, just wonderfully eclectic. Here are some suggestions to inspire you:

Accessories. It’s easy to add country charm without a big investment. Think cool rather than cute; rugged rather than quaint. This wall hanging of galloping horses fits the bill, as does this metal airplane. They are sophisticated yet decidedly country. Another great way to add country appeal is through linens. Plaid cushions and quilts rather than bedspreads, for example.

Colour. Certain colours and combinations are traditionally associated with country – like blue and white, sunny yellow and watermelon red. Choose accent walls or accessories in these shades. Fresh colours like chartreuse and pastel blues and greens also work wonderfully.

Vintage. Antiques and vintage items are synonymous with rustic décor. Antique collectibles, particularly glassware, china, earthenware and pottery – or even old tools, butter boxes, utensils, etc. – all make great displays.

Furniture. Adding rustic pieces to your home has never been easier – there’s a great selection available in distressed, weathered and painted options. A few of my favourites are featured here – like this gorgeous daybed in distressed grey. What a perfect addition to a guest room or a for a child’s room. I also love this armoire in gentle blue and soft white. It would be an ideal focal point in a family room, hallway or even breakfast area. Or how about this fabulous credenza – rustic yet functional at the same time.

Natural. Contrived is counter intuitive to country, so choose fabrics and materials that reflect nature – woods versus plastics, linen versus polyester, real plants versus silks. Handcrafted items (or those that look handcrafted) also suit well.

Repurposing. There’s a common sense practicality to country décor. Convert a weathered trunk to a coffee table, replace glass with mirror in an old window or repaint an old dresser in sophisticated black as a centrepiece in your entranceway.

Wood Walls and Floors. Have a look at the wood panelled accent wall featured in our Vaughan store in the photo above. It was a fairly easy DIY project. Wood panelled walls are making a big comeback. Be daring in a diagonal pattern and by mixing wood types. Wood floors are, of course, a country staple. Purchase previously used floors for rugged beauty.

The rustic look in a city home is all about embracing contrast. Whatever your current style, add rustic discriminately and anchor everything in common colour schemes, proportions or finishes. The overall look should be eclectic yet cohesive.

Living Room Trends – and a Second Store in Vaughan!

June 10, 2015 by Stoney Creek Furniture

There’s no doubt that the living room is the heart of your home – and because it’s where you spend the most time with family and friends, it’s also where you have the opportunity to make your strongest style statement. With that in mind, here are a few living room trends that are hot as we head into summer 2015!

Gild. Our love of metallic continues with gild – not the loud brassy gold of decades past, but beautiful brushed gold, bronze and copper. Silver, nickel and pewter are still solid choices and you can mix and match them all for a luxurious look. You’ll see metal accents on wood furniture as well as with glass and other materials.

Collections. The living room is a great place to show off your individuality! If you have a passion or collection, design a display that celebrates it. Be creative – use the walls, mantel, bookshelves or coffee table. Always be discriminating. Choose collections that have character and add charm, not clutter.

Bold Accents. Bright, gorgeous bursts of colour are popular in living spaces right now. Accessories like cushions are a budget conscious way to add some fun and personality, but larger furniture pieces in bright colours are also very trendy. Blues, notably teal and aqua, are centre stage, but purple, coral and lime are also popular.

Neutrals. Always classic, you simply can’t go wrong with neutral living room furniture. Go for glamour in the design details, such as tufting and wraparound corners.

Rustic. This style remains popular, especially when used in tandem with contemporary elements. Distressed woods mixed with metals and more elegant choices add interest and appeal. A surprising comeback is rugged wooden beams on the ceiling. The juxtaposition against vivid white ceiling paint is quite pleasing.

Coffee Tables. Consider a statement coffee table. Try one with a glass top and ornate metal legs or a leather-topped ottoman/table, with a metal base.

Mid Century Modern. Thanks to Mad Men, this style is all the rage right now. The lines are clean and sleek. Look for pieces that provide comfort and sophistication.

Bookcases. Whether matching or in a contrasting finish, this season you’ll find bookcases in living rooms everywhere. Practical and versatile, you can store your books and they also provide a great showcase for collections. A nice touch is to paint the back wall of the bookcase in a bold or complementary colour.

Highlights from High Point Furniture Market – Future Trends for Your Home!

May 28, 2015 by Stoney Creek Furniture

High Point Furniture Market is twice a year in North Carolina and it’s one of the industry’s leading trade shows. It’s where furniture retailers and buyers go for inspiration and to make their plans for the upcoming seasons. As always, this year’s market didn’t disappoint. I was so excited to see the latest trends, colours, materials and much more. Here’s the latest and greatest from High Point – your personal sneak peek into what’s new for your space!

Go Light and Natural. Lighter and more natural woods are making a comeback. Finishes are low lustre and sandblasted or distressed with acid washes. The look is decidedly rugged and casual. There is a focus on organic and natural elements throughout, for a laidback, uncomplicated beauty.

Leathers. In keeping with a trend toward natural, leathers are often raw, distressed and even destroyed in finish. Prefer something prettier? Leather furniture in unexpected colours like pastel rose is also gaining momentum.

Go for the Gold. While all metals are popular (and mixing metals is encouraged!), rose gold, regular gold and brass are the season’s sweethearts. Warm metals are showing up everywhere as accents and in starring roles.

Timeless Traditional. Ever popular traditional design is becoming more refined and elegant. (Did you read our recent blog on Downton Abbey décor?) Classic and rich is back and so fabulous – even one or two pieces from this genre will give your home old world charm. In many traditional pieces, there’s a commitment to a smaller scale, reflecting downsizing trends and the need for multi-functionality.

Design Details. In contrast to simplicity, there’s also a trend toward complex designs, overlays and marquetry, giving an artisan quality to many pieces. You’ll also find gorgeous rosewoods with gold and silver leaf designs, blending multiple materials beautifully.

Millenials. If you were born from 1981 to 1997, congratulations! Furniture designers are paying more attention to your wants and needs. If you’re perhaps furnishing your first home, you’ll see more pieces that reflect your tastes.

Colour Cues. Teal, turquoise and many shades of blue dominate as well as romantic rose and darker blushes. Why not add an accent furniture piece, accessories or paint a wall in one of the on-trend colours? For neutrals, greys are still the preferred choice, but beiges and naturals are coming on strong again with earthy elements in organic mixes.

Mid-century Modern. Mid-century modern continues to hold its popularity, bringing the sleek, contemporary look of the 50’s and 60’s into our homes. What’s new is that you’ll see mid-century modern in many more colour combinations. Look for earthy greens, kelly greens and soft blue hues in upholstery.

Eclectic Combinations. Many new furniture collections combine several styles for a fresh, whimsical feeling. For example, you’ll find items that combine mid-century with rustic using accents that might be from an ‘up-cycled’ treasure. You’ll see statement pieces that blend metal and concrete or other materials.

Downton Abbey Décor: Get the Look for Your ‘Manor’

May 14, 2015 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Do you long for the opulence and elegance of the incredible estates on Downton Abbey? The show has launched a movement toward the rich, traditional home styles of that time – and while you may not be able to afford a manor, your very own home can exude that charm and grace. All it takes is a few choice pieces and an eye for detail. Here are some suggestions:

Walls. Walls are generally painted soft colours, pale blues, gentle greens. There’s really no place for brights or black and white. Another Downton Abbey favourite is wallpaper. Florals, trellises, damasks, even textured papers are perfect. Often an entire room is papered, particularly bedrooms.

Accessories and Accents. Virtually every surface is enhanced with bric a brac. But be discerning. Choose gilded picture frames, intricately framed mirrors, Chinese blue and white porcelain, silver candlesticks and large vases filled with fresh cut flowers. Glitter, gold and sparkle are essential.

Cushions. Cushions are so important, they warrant individual mention! Cushions are for comfort, undoubtedly, but also added colour, texture and pattern. Needlepoint pillows were extremely popular at the time. I actually own a couple of modern versions –investments, yes – but they instantly transform a sofa or bed into something magical. Look for fringe and tassels on cushions for an authentic look.

Furniture. The furniture choices of this time were made of gleaming dark woods: mahogany, walnut, cherry and oak, for example. As for styling, the key word is ‘curve’. There are no sharp angles or geometrics, just graceful lines. The time is Edwardian, but most traditional periods and styles blend perfectly – look for Queen Anne, Louis XVII, Georgian and Chippendale, to name a few. Many sofa and chair styles incorporated wood as well.

HINT! Certain pieces really bring the era to life. Armoires, dressing screens, elegant side chairs, richly detailed hall consoles – look for modern reproductions that mimic the lines and finishes of the time.

Wall Hangings. Large paintings were the order of the day, typically oils on canvas with deep, vibrant colours. In fact, it was common to shape a room’s colour scheme around the focal art pieces. One of the trademarks of the time is huge portraits. Find one in an antique store or a good reproduction. It adds incredible atmosphere and character!

Lighting. Lavish lamps with fringes, sparkly chandeliers and candelabras illuminate Edwardian rooms. As with all things from this period, a little excess is de rigueur.

Foyer. The most important room in the house from this period is the foyer or entranceway. It sets the tone for the beauty to follow! Make yours outstanding with glossy hardwood or parquet flooring, a plush wool rug, a statement console and a substantial mirror with ornate frame.

Architectural Details. Again, details make the difference. Cornices, ceiling mouldings, wide baseboards, pilasters, plaster swags – all of these add interest and character. Don’t necessarily paint them vivid white. A soft creamy ivory is more subtle.

Modern Life. Of course we love our modern conveniences and pleasures like TV, computers, music systems, etc. Where possible, keep them hidden but easily accessible. Hmm, that’s a great reason to buy that incredible armoire!
