Tips on How to Choose an Office Desk

September 12, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

I have never outgrown the back to school feeling. No surprise then that I just bought a new office desk that I absolutely love. If you’re in the market for a desk, here are some considerations to take into account and suggestions to help you make the perfect choice.

Size/Placement. Your first decision is size. How much space do you have for your desk? Do you just have a little corner – or a whole room? (I saw an ‘office’ online built inside a closet!) Where will you place the desk in the room? Consider lighting. To prevent screen glare, you may want natural light coming forward rather than behind you. You may want to place your desk in the middle of the room, but then be aware of wiring issues. Think your placement through.

Ergonomics. Be sure your desk gives you ample leg room and accommodates your height (when seated and you lay your forearms on the table, your elbows should be at 90 degrees). Check that your chair tucks under your desk easily (consider the chair arms). Finally, your monitor should be at least 12 inches from your eyes.

Shape. Some of the more common desk shapes (and their pros and cons) are:

  • Rectangle. The basic desk, in various sizes, with or without drawers or pedestals. Your most versatile desk, it fits in most areas and is available in many materials. May not accommodate your needs if you require a big work area.
  •  Corner. Fits in a small corner, which is convenient, but you are then facing a corner, which many people find confining.
  • U-shaped. Loads of space and everything is in easy reach. Great if you need to spread out work. Takes up a large footprint.
  • L-shaped. A nice compromise, providing ample space and a separate computer area if you choose. Shape can be limiting; doesn’t work in every room.
  • Armoire. These desks look great and are very tidy as the desk folds up and away – but generally very small work area on the actual desk top.
  • Hutch. Almost any desk can also be configured with a hutch. Provides vertical storage space without enlarging your footprint, but may make the desk the focal point of the room.

Style. Choose a desk that complements your décor in terms of material, colour, ornamentation, etc. – or choose an opposing style for interest. An antique secretary desk would look spectacular in a modern family room. A desk doesn’t have to be boring. Many models have beautiful detailing, leg shapes, etc.

Storage. How much storage space do you need? This will determine how many drawers you require (if any), or if a hutch is the answer, or perhaps a separate bookcase or file cabinet.

Material. Many people choose laminate as it’s inexpensive and practical. Metal also works well, but looks very industrial. Wood is a great investment choice and looks amazing, but can scratch more easily. Whatever you choose, be sure any drawers move smoothly and everything fits together perfectly.

Personality. Be honest! Are you a neat freak? A small desk and few drawers may work. Are you messy? Give yourself more surface and storage area and consider a location that keeps the desk out of view.

Use. How will you use the desk? If mostly for computer use, look for wiring holes and space for monitors. If for paperwork or study, allow more space to spread things out. If it’s a multi-person desk, consider an extra long rectangular shape that can seat two. (Hint: a narrow dining table or harvest table may do the trick!)

Top 10 Decorating Mistakes with Furniture

September 5, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

We all like to think that we’re good decorators – but truthfully – we all probably make a few decorating mistakes here and there, especially when it comes to furniture. No worries, here are some tips to help you choose and place your furniture pieces expertly.

1. No Matchy Matchy. Resist the temptation to make everything match. If you buy a dark wood bedroom suite, pair it with glass and metal night stands. Choose accent chairs that are different than your sofa and loveseat. Everything should blend and you need anchors, but mixing it up will add visual interest.

2. Stay on Scale. A small room generally needs smaller furniture pieces, while a larger room can carry off substantial items. But beyond the overall size of a piece, also consider how it will work with the other elements around it – for example – your end tables and coffee table need to balance with the proportions of your sofa. Likewise, don’t choose large, plushy accent chairs if your sofa is more delicate in design

3. Don’t be too Formal. If not done right, formal can say ‘stay away’ to your guests. Every room should have a warm, inviting feeling. If you love a formal style like Victorian, use sparingly and soften the effect by including relaxed pieces.

4. Seek Continuity. Beware of the furniture in each room of your home standing alone. Eclectic is fun, but everything must harmonize with a common foundation as you walk from room to room. Avoid having a different look in each space – yes, mix and match – but go with a primary style or colour throughout.

5. Look Beyond Looks. We fall in love with how furniture looks, but make sure it’s also comfortable and durable. No matter how beautiful that dresser is, if the drawers don’t open smoothly, you might want to consider something else. Same for that gorgeous loveseat if it doesn’t offer solid lumbar support.

6. Keep Themes in Check. A theme is fun but refrain from being ‘cutesy’. Some of the best ways to tame theme overload is to ground it with natural materials and neutral colours.

7. Go Off the Wall. Attempt to bring your furniture forward and away from the walls. It’s cozier and more conducive to conversation. Frame with side tables or anchor with a rug. Tip:  If you have space in your bedroom, a ‘floating’ bed is gorgeous.

8. Say So Long to Stuff. Edit, edit, edit! No matter how beautiful your furniture is, if you bury it in ‘stuff’, it goes unnoticed. Too many collections, photos, books – ask a friend with a good eye to help you purge.

9. Stay Up to Date. When you buy investment furniture, you want it to last – and it should. But don’t get stuck in an era. Sometimes, just changing drawer hardware or adding new accessories ups the wow factor. One new focal piece in a room can totally change the vibe of the space.

10. Show Your Personality. You are one of a kind and your home should be too! Don’t be afraid to incorporate furniture you love. That accent chest in your bathroom? Yes! The antique secretary in your modern family room? Absolutely! Just be sure you make it work by blending. Put a neutral pillow that matches the sofa on the chair. Use a modern nickel finish lamp on the desk.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Mattress

August 29, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

If you’re in the market for a new mattress, you’re probably feeling overwhelmed at the variety of options available. Before you commit to one particular type of mattress, it’s important to do your homework and be prepared when you go in the stores. Here are some things to consider before buying a mattress:

Evaluate Your Bedroom. If you’re having trouble sleeping, you may assume that your mattress is the culprit. Before you invest in a new mattress, check that your bedroom is a haven for rest. Think about temperature, humidity, dust levels, lighting, noise, etc.

Visit Your Doctor. See your doctor if you suspect you have a health issue that’s disturbing your sleep. If you do, be sure that you buy the right mattress to address the problem. For example:

  • Osteoarthritis. Individuals with osteoarthritis may find that an adjustable bed that allows the head and knees to be to be elevated will help relieve pressure on the facet joints of the spine.
  • Bursitis. People coping with bursitis may find a too firm mattress actually causes pain. A softer surface may be better.
  • Lower back pain. Medium-firm mattresses usually provide more back pain relief than very firm mattresses.

Research. Read product reviews and comparisons before you begin shopping. Get an idea of your budget and what’s available within it.

Space. It may sound obvious, but measure the area where you intend to put the bed to be sure it fits and looks aesthetically pleasing – and that it can be navigated up your stairway. (Sadly, I speak from experience on this last point!)

Price/Quality. Generally, you get what you pay for – higher price, better quality. But don’t assume a higher-priced mattress is necessarily the perfect one for you. Try, try, try before you buy!

15-Minute Test. No matter how silly you feel, spend 15 minutes on a bed to evaluate it, ideally with your partner. Try softer, mid-range and firmer mattresses until you find one that’s just right. Light people don’t need thick pillow top mattresses – they likely won’t compress the foam enough to touch the underlying coils. Conversely, heavier people need the extra cushioning between them and the coils.

Warranty & Guarantee. Your mattress should have a minimum 10-year warranty. Be sure to check the specifics. Be smart and buy a waterproof cover for your mattress. Stains may void your warranty.

Beyond Furniture
Here are a few suggestions to help make your daughter’s room a happy place:

  • Colour. Choose a soft hue for walls that will soothe your child to sleep. Soft lavender, pale blue or seafoam green are perfect. Avoid brights and especially yellow. Studies show that even pale yellow causes agitation!
  • Cushions. Add mounds of bright and beautiful patterned cushions to make the room cozy and colourful.
  • Rug. Rugs make playtime comfy and add warmth. Choose something with a fun pattern and be sure to always secure with non-skid backing.
  • Seating Area. A small sofa or loveseat is a great addition to curl up and read with your child.
  • Art Exhibit.Display your child’s masterpieces in easy-to-change acrylic frames or hang a ‘clothesline’ made of ribbon and anchor with colourful clothes pegs.
  • Dresses. Accent the room with those special dresses – try it as a lampshade or simply a hang it as a piece of art.
