Functional Flooring Options

March 18, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

With so many options when it comes to flooring, how does one decide the right choice? We all know that cost is a huge factor, however it is necessary that your floors suit your room and lifestyle. Beyond the aesthetics, you need to consider the functions of each type of flooring:

 flooring

Carpet
Carpet is the quietest option of flooring because it helps to reduce noise levels. If you have a toddler that is stumbling around the fibers offer a cushion if he/she falls, thus minimizing injury. It also acts as a great insulator and will keep your rooms warmer in the winter months as oppose to harder flooring options. Carpets are not an ideal option if a member of the household has allergies or asthma. It can also be a pain to clean, and would need to be vacuumed regularly and shampooed annually in order to extend its lifespan.

Ceramic Tile
Ceramic tiles come in a huge variety of colours and designs. Ceramic tile is ideal for bathrooms and kitchens because it can withstand moisture due to its non-porous surface. Tiles can be difficult to install, however the payoff can be quite beautiful. Ceramic can help keep a room cool so this type of flooring is better suited for warmer climates. Tiles are simple to clean however they have a tendency to crack if large accidents happen.

Hardwood Floors
Wood flooring is another great option and very popular among homeowners. Wood floors don’t store dust or bacteria the way that carpet does. This type of floor is extremely easy to clean and can keep your rooms cooler in the summer. Hardwood flooring is also a very durable option because it’s difficult to dent, especially if you have a protective seal. It’s a good idea to avoid putting hardwood floors in humid rooms such as the bathroom as there is the potential for mold and water damage.

Want more options? Alexanian Carpet & Flooring will be here for one night only on Thursday, March 20 from 5:30-9pm with the latest trends in flooring. Berber or plush? Bamboo or cork? Hardwood or laminate? Discover what best suits your lifestyle. Come to Stoney Creek Furniture’s Inside Out Home Show to speak to these knowledgeable professionals!
