Say Goodbye to Outdated Wallpaper and Hello to Paint!

March 10, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

wallpaperOutdated wallpaper can be a pain to deal with. If wallpaper is several years old it can cause unfortunate damage to your walls. Looking for a way to rid that retched wallpaper without the headache? It is possible to paint over it! Here are some great quick tips on painting over wallpaper:

It’s all in the prep!

• Replace any damaged or ripped areas by adding an adhesive to the loose parts. This will minimize the chance of the wallpaper falling off.

• Around the perimeter of the walls, add a thin line of clear caulk, at the joint seams. This will prevent the wallpaper from peeling and falling off.

• Is your wallpaper textured with a heavy pattern? Cover with a thin coat of spackle (joint compound) to help even out the wall’s surface.

• Before painting, sand down the wallpaper seams gently to make them less noticeable.

• In order to help seal the paper away from the wetness in the paint, apply an oil-based primer to all of the walls before painting.

• When purchasing your paint make sure you buy enough for a second paint coat, for optimum results in quality of color and finish.

Now get your rollers ready and paint away!

If you don’t have to resources to do a full on wallpaper operation this is a great way to spruce up your home! Want to know more? Come on down to the Stoney Creek Furniture Inside Out Home Show on Thursday, March 20 from 5:30-9pm. Want to know what colours are trendy? Whether or not you should choose pastels or jewel tones? Get Grilling! The Best BBQ Tips

March 9, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

grillingSucculent steaks, juicy burgers, roasted veggies, perfect chicken; the possibilities are endless this grilling season! There’s a lot to know about the art of barbequing and an abundance of recipes to try. Whether you’re a master griller or new to the barbeque business, these top tips will be a sure way to have your taste buds hungry for more!

Charcoal vs. Gas?
When considering this question, one must evaluate many variables. Charcoal grills emit more carbon monoxide, particulate matter and soot into the atmosphere, contributing to increased pollution and higher concentrations of ground-level ozone. Gas grills burn cleaner however there are no studies prove that one is healthier than the other. Taste wise, charcoal grills offer a smokier option. In the end, it really comes down to personal preference in relation to a variety of variables.

Au Natural
Conventional charcoals have been known to contain chemical additives such as paraffin, sodium nitrate, borax or lighter fluid. Try your best to avoid lighter fluid because it can release volatile organic compounds, leaving a distasteful residue on your food. So if you do choose a charcoal grill, consider picking up charcoal that is additive-free. It is essentially just charred wood and contains no harmful chemical additives.

It’s okay to lose your cool
Let your food have enough time out of the fridge before getting on the grill. If the meat or vegetable is too cold in the center, the outside may burn before the insides are cooked through. Raw meat can be dangerous if not cooked properly! It takes approximately 20 minutes, for raw food to start approaching room temperature.

Heat things up!
Preheat your grill 15 to 25 minutes before you start cooking to make sure it reaches the correct temperature. By effectively heating up your barbeque you can kill any lingering bacteria. A correctly heated grill keeps the insides moist, sears on contact and helps prevent the food from sticking.

Add a little oil
Reduce sticking by oiling your hot grill rack with a vegetable oil-soaked paper towel: hold it with tongs and rub it over the rack. Proceed with caution when doing this and never use cooking oil spray on a grill! It can be extremely dangerous.

All this talk of barbequing is stirring up quite an appetite! Please remember to be safe this grilling season, take precaution and keep an eye on the flame! Looking for a new barbecue or need guidance on grilling? RSVP to Stoney Creek Furniture’s Inside Out Home Show and talk to the masters at Lakeshore Living Outdoor Elements for all your barbequing needs. You’ll be ready for this summer in no time!

Helping the Hungry and Making a Difference

March 8, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Did you know: As many as 17,069 people turn to a food bank in our community monthly? And that 36% are children under the age of 18?

Hungry

Here at Stoney Creek Furniture, we are passionate about about helping our community. This is why we’re supporting Hamilton Food Share, to ensure that no one in our great community go to bed hungry.

Since 1990, the Hamilton Food Share organization has supported hunger relief by supplying needed food provisions, hot meal programs and short-term storage to food banks. Hamilton Food Share relies on the support of area businesses and donations to make a difference in the Hamilton community so all members can have access to safe, adequate and appropriate food options.

Since their inception 20 years ago, food banks have experienced many changes. Food banks were originally created to solve temporary emergencies. As incomes recede and financial troubles increase, food banks have become the last resort before homelessness. Twenty years later, low-income families are living in crisis and are at great risk of losing their housing. Many families today rely heavily on food banks in order to meet their current economic difficulties.

Hamilton Food Share’s allocation resources assists with the costs for food programs and redirect these savings for improvement. They also work collaboratively in our community to bring awareness of hunger. It is vital that we support these efforts so that no one has to worry about tomorrow’s meals.

Come support our community and help end hunger at Stoney Creek Furniture’s Inside Out Home Show on Thursday, March 20 from 5:30-9pm. In lieu of an admission fee, please share your good fortune by making a donation to Hamilton Food Share. Every $1 raised equals $5 worth of food. Thank you!
