Do you have a case of the winter blues? Brighten your day with some plants! It is known that many people suffer from seasonal depression, high levels of stress and vitamin D deficiencies, all of which make the winter season harder than it is. Unfortunately not all of us can jump on a plane and head to the tropics. One way to mitigate the daily stresses and emotional struggles is to buy flowers and plants for your home! Plants and flowers have become more than just pretty décor. Various studies show that fresh flowers and fresh plants have numerous benefits on your well being.

Here are some ways they can benefit you:

Emotional Health
Behavioural studies have been conducted on the emotional reaction to flowers and plants. It has been proven that the presence of flowers creates positive emotions of happiness, satisfaction and overall benefited individual social behaviour. These feelings and reactions were significantly increased when flowers were received as a gift. Consider sending your loved ones a fresh bouquet or a potted orchid!

Mental Health
For years, scientists have been researching and studying the positive mental benefits of flowers and plants. Researchers have observed hospital patients and their reactions when fresh flowers were placed in their rooms. It was proven that patients needed less medication, had more energy, and an overall brightened mood. Studies show that when flowers are present in a room, individuals are less anxious and stressed. Scientists also believe that plants and flowers help with memory. Leafy green plants have been shown to promote concentration while stimulating creativity as well. So grab that fern next time your feeling a little anxious!

Scent and Air
Forget those artificially scented room sprays and candles! Place some beautiful roses on your table and fill your home with a wonderful uplifting scent. It is known that scents have a huge impact on the way we feel. Not only do flowers and plants benefit your nose, they help your lungs too! Plants help clean the air of pollutants in your home as well.

So next time you’re in need of a pick me up, pick up a plant! Your mind, well-being and nose will thank you!

For more tips and advice on flowers and plants make sure to attend the Stoney Creek Furniture Inside Out Home Show on Thursday, March 20 from 5:30-9pm. All About Bookcases: How to Make Your Shelves Functional and Fun

February 28, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

In these days of e-readers, I must confess, I still love books. There’s something wonderfully comfortable about reading a book and turning the pages one by one. So it’s only fitting that bookcases are one of my favourite pieces of furniture. Practical and playful all at once, bookcases are among the most versatile furniture in your home.

Types of Bookcases

Bookcases are available in wood, metal, plastic and combinations of all of these. There’s a huge variety of styles, themes and sizes available depending on how much space you have, how the bookcase will be used and your home décor. Many bookcases are a blend of the styles below and often incorporate doors for added storage – and we all love that!

Barrister Bookcases are stackable or fixed with separate glass doors hinged at the top of each shelf to slide up and out of the way. Traditional in appearance, these are great bookcases to hold items that need protection and have deep tall shelves to accommodate very large books.

Modular Bookcases can be used individually or in groups, in endless configurations, stacked horizontally or vertically. They are often cube units that slide or snap together to create a tall or low horizontal bookcase – great for contemporary spaces.

Ladder Bookcases look like a ladder with shelves where ladder rungs would be. With some ladder bookcases the shelves vary in size, starting larger at the bottom through to smaller at the top. This bookcase has a sleek design and works great in small spaces.

Shelf Bookcases are the most common type of bookcase. They can be open-backed or closed-backed with adjustable or non-adjustable shelves, free-standing or built into the wall. These bookcases can be 2 shelves up to 6 shelves or more and can be used alone or placed with other units. The variety is endless!

Plain bookcases can be dressed up to make a style statement. You can paint them the same colour as your walls to blend in or paint them in a contrasting colour for impact – go bright and bold. A gentle pastel may also be charming, depending on your decor. Black or white are always great choices too. Another clever option is to wallpaper the back wall of the bookcase, but then you’ll need to keep your displays less fussy, perhaps focused on solid colours.

Tip! Paint the inside back wall of your bookcase two shades darker than your room wall.

Decorating a Bookcase

It starts with books certainly, but from there, use your imagination. View each shelf as a display for your treasures and trinkets too. Vary height and size for interest. Bookcases are a great place for family photos or heirlooms as well. Add an antique piece or a tall statue – and of course – your collections. Don’t forget that bookcases can also be used for storage. If it’s on display, use pretty wicker baskets or boxes covered in fabric.

Hmmm….But Where?

Most bookcases are high and narrow in depth, offering a small footprint on your floor space. What this means is that they can fit almost anywhere in your home. The living room, family room, office, and bedrooms certainly, but what about in a hallway or on staircase landing or even in a stairwell perhaps? What about a kitchen bookcase for your recipe books? Or a tiny bookcase for the powder room with funny little books, lovely soaps, towels and a candle? Remember, built-ins give you the option to put a bookcase exactly where you want and the style and size you need.

What I like best about bookcases is that they combine function and aesthetics beautifully – providing a home for your books and an opportunity to showcase your style!

Serene, Sensational Aqua: How to Add it to Your Home

February 14, 2014 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Maybe it’s the cold winter weather making me dream of sun-drenched beaches and azure waves, but aqua is on my mind. And apparently, many others are thinking of it too! Aqua and turquoise are among the hottest colours this season – popping up in homes everywhere. For those who think it’s a crazy colour for home decor, think again. Aqua is being used in even the most traditional homes with great results. Here are some thoughts and tips for using AQUA:

1. Neutralize it. If you’re thinking aqua walls, too bright or too pastel shades may be inappropriate – especially for a main living area. This season’s pastels are ‘grayed’ or ‘beiged’ – a little dusty and a little more subtle.

2. Unless…it’s a bathroom! Powder rooms and bathrooms look great in vivid aqua. Sparkling white fixtures and shiny chrome make aqua look so fresh and fun. For a classic look, choose black and white floor tiles.powder room

Tip – Do you know that you can buy vintage aqua bathroom fixtures from the 1970s? This would be gorgeous with black, white or gray accents.

Aqua and Red3. Speaking of accents…What colours coordinate with aqua? Complementary colours on the opposite of the colour wheel work well — these are oranges and red, including scarlet, raspberry and burgundy.

Colours on the same side of the wheel are royal blue, emerald green and minty greens. These create a much softer, blended effect. One of my favourite choices is navy with aqua. Navy always adds a classic, sophisticated touch.

4. Neutrals with aqua. All neutrals work well with aqua…gray, white, beige and black. It depends on the look you want to achieve. Gray and beige with aqua are more conservative, white is very feminine, black very dramatic and modern. One popular choice is tan with aqua. It creates a beachy, cottage feeling.  Some nautical and seashore touches and you have the perfect oasis right in your home.

5. Which wood for your furniture? Again, aqua is versatile. White wood is pretty with aqua, maybe for a child’s room. Darker woods add richness, giving depth to aqua walls or accessories. Light wood is more casual and laid back. Wickers and bamboos work well too.

6. Accessories. Thanks to the trendiness of aqua right now, accessories abound. There’s no shortage of linens, kitchen accessories, place mats, throws, cushions – whatever you want. Accessories are an inexpensive way to add aqua without a big commitment.

Tip – Aqua glass is simply stunning. Vases, bowls, pitchers – they look great in a grouping! Put them on a sunny window sill; add lime green and raspberry glass too.

7. Aqua upholstery. Why not? Consider a gorgeous aqua sofa or side chair. Combine it with more rugged choices like brown leather pieces or durable twills for contrast.

8. Really? You’d use aqua there? Yes! The unexpected is ideal for this fun-loving colour. A cast iron bed painted aqua. An old rocking chair in soft turquoise. Aqua Muskoka chairs (out of this world pretty!) How about a bright aqua front door? Even one spectacular piece of aqua furniture in your hallway.

Tip – Try painting the inside of white bookcases or open cupboards in vivid aqua. Bye bye boring!

9. Aqua ceiling. Soft aqua on your ceiling, framed in white trim, is like having a blue sky above you all the time. Keep it light and soft.

10. Wall of beach pictures. Create a gallery of beach pictures and photos. The aqua in the water unifies the theme. Keep the frames all one colour to unify the look further.
