Tips and Ideas for a Great Summer Garden

May 24, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

This is not a blog for the master gardener or landscaping guru. This is for all of you with an outdoor space that you want to make pretty this summer – maybe a small garden, maybe a balcony. You are more into creative than costly, but you still want to impress. Here are a few easy ideas to help get you started.

This is the big decision and I recommend that you speak to a good nursery about the size of your space and amount of sun exposure in your area. Keep height and spreading restrictions in mind. Plants grow!! I suggest annuals for beginner gardeners. They last just one season and give you the opportunity to learn what works (and what doesn’t). Some of the easiest choices are below, assuming you live in southern Ontario.

Northern exposure. Shady and often windy. Best choices: impatiens, begonias, coleus, trailing lobelia (especially for hanging baskets) and browallia.petunias

Eastern exposure. It’s sunny, but not hot afternoon sun. Geraniums, petunias, dusty miller, impatiens, lobelia, snapdragons, tuberous begonias and salvia will be happy here. impatiens

Southern exposure. Bright and hot. Plan on watering a lot! Try zinnias, cleome, marigolds, four o’clock, geraniums, bacopa and sun flowers.zinnias

Western exposure. Even hotter and just as bright! Portulaca, zinnias, marigolds, cosmos, dusty miller, salvia, snapdragons, cleome and sunflowers will do well.cosmos

Don’t forget vegetables! Even a balcony has room for tomatoes and strawberries.strawberry plant

What to Plant In

Whether you have a little or a lot of space, some original thinking helps you create planters with pizzazz. Try these on for size this summer:

Wooden boxes or crates. Vintage wooden boxes showing brands and logos make especially cool planters.crate planter

Wire baskets. Line them with a layer of peat moss and you have an innovative home for your plants. Maybe you have one of those old hangers for fruit that typically had three wire baskets. It will look great housing bright and beautiful posies!

Paint cans. One of my favourites! Take off the labels and you have shiny and pretty planters! Create a grouping for bigger impact.Planters

Drawers. Sounds crazy but looks great. Old desk or cupboard drawers add whimsy as planters. Add stand-out drawer handles for extra punch.

Small pot series. Rather than one big planter, a balcony may look better with a series of small pots. Terra cotta pots are an unbeatable value. Paint them solid colours or in patterns (polka dots or stripes maybe?) for added appeal. Mount them to a wall if you are shy on shelf space.Planters

Mason jars. Tiny plants will enjoy mason jars as their summer home. Again, a grouping often looks more impressive. Dress up the jars if you want – or keep them clear and shiny.

Mugs and cups. If you have odd cups and mugs, put them to use to hold small plants. Arrange them artfully, perhaps on a tray, for a beautiful traditional look.

Old  Mailboxes. This is another great idea for a wall mounting. Just build a grouping to suit your plants. planters

Vertical gardening. Think multi-level. Put plants in groupings of various heights, one peeking out from behind the other. Small on space, big on style!mixed terra cotta pots

Bathtub. A old smaller bath tub can be a spectacular planter. And with so much room, you can really be creative!bath tub planter

There are so many ways to spice up your outdoor space this year. Start by choosing plants you love that will thrive in the environment you have – and then use your imagination to find and build great planters. And most importantly, have fun!

Lighting Ideas for Your Home

May 16, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Lighting is a powerful tool to achieve the style and ambience you want in your home. It can accentuate treasured objects, hide less than perfect architecture, create a mood – and of course, it’s also very functional. Today, some light fixtures are so dramatic and so stunningly designed, they are art in themselves and become a focal point in a room. And just like furniture and accessories, there are new trends this year:

Bold is Beautiful. This season, we’re sold on bold. As in furniture and design, lighting is dramatic. Look for chrome, gold brushed and polished nickel; statement metallic is everywhere. Shapes are geometric and daring. You can design a room around this year’s lighting choices.pendant light

Make a Statement. Don’t settle for ordinary. Choose fixtures that stand out – especially for main areas like the kitchen, living room, dining room, family room and bedroom. Chandeliers are a great idea! They come in a variety of sizes, styles and materials, from contemporary to ornate. Put one in an unexpected place… how about something small and sparkly in the powder room?chandelier

A Penchant for Pendants. Pendants make perfect accent lights and there’s no limit to the variety available this season. Use them for task lighting, to highlight a table or in conversation areas. They are high on style and low on glare to create a soft, subtle ambience. pendant

Think Green. Energy efficiency is on everyone’s mind this year. You’ll see lots of choices in LED, halogen, fluorescent and xenon lighting. These lights are longer lasting and you’ll have lower power bills.

There are so many ways to use lighting creatively in your home. Here are a few ideas to ignite your imagination:

Use your main light to illuminate the central seating area and then choose auxiliary lights to accentuate special artwork, decor items or plants.

Try putting a lamp with soft light at the end of your dining room table. You can add flowers for added effect. It will generate warmth and softness – a much more flattering light than many overhead fixtures.

Want to make the most of any lighting? Paint your ceiling a warm colour in a high gloss finish. It makes everyone look radiant. Warm pink or a soft peach does the trick.

Include multiple sources of light. A room should have multiple kinds of light to balance it and give it interest: hanging fixtures, table lamps, accent lights… and don’t forget candles. Candle groupings look beautiful and generate a mood like no other lighting.

Make the most of natural light. There is simply no substitute! Let light in through curtains that are airy and transparent. Keep window treatments minimal and your rooms will look and feel more spacious.

And here is a tip… if you purchase a fixture that requires a unique type of light bulb, buy a few extra bulbs at that time so you aren’t hunting for one when it needs to be replaced.

The Great Gatsby: A Glorious Era in Furniture – Back Again!

May 10, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Ah, the roaring 20’s. It was a time of prosperity, of indulgence, of “ritzy” living. This was the setting for “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is not only a great novel, but a lifestyle inspiration.

Today, the movie The Great Gatsby is released and it’s inspired a resurgence of interest in everything 1920’s – the glitz, the glamour, the luxury and the extravagance. Furniture and home decor are no exception. And why not? The furniture style of the time was primarily Art-Deco – marked by clean lines, simplicity, geometrics and sharp angles. It’s a gorgeous style that is both contemporary and traditional all at once. It is classic – if you invest in Art Deco, you have an elegant look that will stand the test of time.

Hallmarks of “The Great Gatsby” Style

In the 1920’s, things that were impressive or great were often called “spiffy” or “swanky” or even “nifty” – and while those expressions have faded – the beauty of the era remains. For 1920’s Great Gatsby decor style, look for:

Mirrored, lacquered furniture. High gloss equals high style. The look says pure opulence. The lines are typically simple and uncomplicated with dramatic finishes.

Glass and metal. This was an era of excess, a time when everything sparkled. You can bring that to your home today with furniture that has touches of polished metal: gold, nickel, silver. Paired with glass, the look is even more stunning. Look for it in coffee and accent tables.

Geometry meets art. Geometric shapes like circles, triangles and squares were everywhere – you’ll see them again in upholstery, wall coverings and accessories – and also echoed in furniture: round chair backs, unusual angles and clean, straight table legs.

Crystal. Crystal is shimmer with substance…the look that says “you’ve arrived”. Be sure to add crystal vases, picture frames, dishes and candlesticks to your Great Gatsby home.

Accessories. Art-Deco art was “in” – and that means vivid, bright, bold art posters. Lighting was romantic and over-the-top. You need to remember one word: chandeliers. They are intrinsic to the Great Gatsby style. Fabrics are equally luxurious: satin, damask, cashmere.

Keep it light. Furniture of the 1920s was often light in finish – gorgeous off whites, vanillas, soft grays, caramel browns – nothing dark or harsh. The mood was upbeat and that’s reflected in furniture and decor that is serious and stately, but never drab or dull – always exciting.

Sofas and settees. Ladies in fabulous flapper outfits were the rage– and the sofas of the time were the perfect backdrop for them to entertain with elegance. You’ll see that style again with buttoned down yet plush upholstery, tufts, wonderfully pure lines and a more “proper”, structured appearance. Nothing slouchy about these sofas!

Quilting. As an added extravagance, some furniture pieces are quilted in part, often with metallic upholstery. It’s all part of the lavish look that says “plenty”.

Whether in furniture or accessories, everything should subtly indicate wealth. Nothing is spared and yet the look is never crowded. Look for crystal lamps, silk bedding, gold trim and statement pieces. Beds are sumptuous, tables are magnificent – you get the idea!

Trend Report from the Spring 2013 High Point Furniture Market

May 2, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

We recently returned from North Carolina where we attended the High Point Furniture Market – the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world. It happens twice a year, with over 11 million square feet of furniture and accessories on display. We walked and saw so much – it was very inspiring. Here are some of the trends that caught our attention – and some will be coming to our store in the months ahead.

Fabric – Pretty and luxurious is back! Think French elegance.

  • Look for embroidery on fabrics, upholstery, linens, etc. These statement accents give a one-of-a-kind feeling to pieces.
  • Bold and bright patterns. Bold geometrics captured our attention. What a great way to add drama!
  • Nothing subtle about colour this season! Blue is everywhere along with purple, fuchsia and orange. Choose accessories in these vibrant shades or even a signature piece like a chair or loveseat.
  • Look for glazed linen and raw silks; simply the height of luxury. Why not indulge in something truly beautiful?
  • Tufts on fabric and leather add a feeling of plenty and abundance – so classic!southern Tufted Bed - Jessica McClintock southern

Styles and Eras – Variety, variety, variety!

  • Flea Market Chic and the Recycled look are very popular. You’ll see tables, chests and accent pieces made from recycled woods, metals and natural elements like shell marquetry.
  • Neo-classical furniture styles are also a hot trend. Think 18th century sensibility like Louis XVI with sharp angles and straight lines or the Empire style, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship with details like gilded bronze mounts and embellishments.
  • Art-Deco – There’s a hint of art-deco in the air – an exciting style blend of craft and technology. Lavish ornamentation, rich colours and bold shapes are cropping up everywhere!
  • Global influence – Spanish, African, tribal – it’s an eclectic look that embraces diversity.
  • Vintage meets Industrial. These opposites are being brought together to create interesting, stunning spaces. Picture a modern loft with contemporary furnishings and the juxtaposition of a velvet settee.

Finishes – Contemporary and classic.

  • Brushed gold is so popular!  Look for it on table bases, chairs, lighting, mirrors, etc. It’s a rich, opulent look.
  • Watch for wood furniture with metal details and finishings. Brushed gold, silver and other metals that add polish and a hint of glamour.
  • Painted finishes on statement and accent pieces create gorgeous focal points in any room.
  • Smokey grey wood finishes were incredibly popular at Market. They look perfect when combined with flea market chic pieces.Lauerl H 5 copy

Shapes and Sizes

  • Smaller scaled furniture continues to be a staple offering as many people choose smaller homes and condos.
  • Honeycombs are on trend in table bases, design elements and lighting.
  • Bars are back! Nowadays subtle is the style with small modern chests that open to reveal a bar with all the accoutrements.

And to summarize all of this, here is what our Buyer, Lori Negrinotti has to say:

“This season, contrast is the key word in furniture trends. It’s flea market chic paired with classical style; it’s ‘crafty’ accessories mixed with sumptuous raw silk linens; it’s the simplicity of contemporary against the luxury of gold-embossed pieces. It adds up to a wonderfully eclectic interplay and an overall feeling of abundance, comfort and living well.”

We can’t wait until some of these beautiful furnishings and accessories start arriving at our store so you can incorporate these trends into your home. Be sure to stop by regularly to see what is new!
