Making it Work! Create and Organize a Home Office

January 2, 2013 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Yes, it’s 2013… already!!! If you’re like me, your New Year’s resolution is to get organized. (The good news is that it’s easier than losing weight or quitting smoking!) One of the best places to start is creating a home office space. Whether you work from home full time or occasionally, or would simply like an area to take care of household bills, a home office will help you manage your time and your tasks more efficiently.

Getting Started

Location & Lighting First things first, you need a space. If you have a spare bedroom, this is ideal. Some people set up in an attic or basement, but be warned, you may find it dark, damp or dreary. Other suggestions are a corner of the dining room (if you don’t sit formally for meals often), or an area in your master bedroom. Keep in mind how much disturbance there will be wherever you choose. Also, make lighting a priority. Natural light lifts the spirits! Add task or accent lighting to be sure you aren’t straining to see.

Alfresco201611495733_174-OTD-b1Electrical Be sure you have enough outlets and connections for all your tech tools – computer, scanner, phone, fax, etc.

Mercantile_050-OLS-b1Furniture It begins with finding the perfect desk. I like a large desk with room to spread out projects. There are many desk options available: a computer desk with pullout keyboard shelf, executive desk with pedestals, L-shaped configurations and desks with built-in shelves overhead – the list goes on and on!  Another option is to use a kitchen or dining room table as your desk – lots of space! If you’re tight on room, a wall-mounted folding table can be installed right next to your desk, folded out when needed and folded away when it’s not.

Next to consider is your chair – and again – there are many choices. The only really important question to ask is “Am I comfortable sitting here?” Try various executive chairs, task chairs, ergonomic chairs, swivel chairs, leather chairs and fabric chairs on for size – see what works best for you. Aim to give your back lots of support.

Once you have a desk and chair, depending on your needs, budget and space, you can add shelving, a credenza, storage units and filing cabinets.

Set Up

If there is room, have your desk facing the door. It allows you to survey your space and feel unconfined. If you can’t achieve this, try arranging it on an angle that gives you at least a partial view into the room or out the window. Try to keep things you need frequently in easy reach. I use baskets for odds and ends and stack them to keep them tidy.

You don’t have to achieve a matched look with your furniture and design. An antique desk can look gorgeous with a modern leather chair. As with the rest of your home, make your office a place you enjoy spending time!

Hmmm… what to do with the walls? If your home is neutral, perhaps you can complement the look with a soft orange or yellow paint. Greens and blues are calming and may help you focus, while spicy reds and golds are energizing and uplifting. Maybe one dark wall for achievements or artwork would work well. Your office is a great place for expressing your colour personality!

Plants

Plants reduce stress and increase productivity. Enough said!

transitionalWood

According to feng shui, wood inspires creativity, so attempt to bring wood into your office space through your furniture and accessories.

Just because it’s a work area, doesn’t mean your space has to be all business! Add some whimsy with colourful art, candles and fun storage containers. Maybe upholster your office chair in an animal print! A beautiful office will promote productivity…

Whatever your plans for your office space, be sure to drop by Stoney Creek Furniture to see the great selection of furniture available. Stoney Creek Furniture has a huge variety of traditional desks, L-shaped desks, file cabinets, bookcases and more, in many styles and price points.

Hostess Gifts for the Holidays… or for Any Days!

December 21, 2012 by Stoney Creek Furniture

There’s so much advice about how to be the “hostess with the mostest”… but how about how to be the “guest who’s the best”?! When you’re invited to a party or dinner, it’s easy to just bring a bottle of wine or flowers (and there’s nothing wrong with the tried and true!), but this season, why not step it up a notch? With a little imagination, you can bring a huge smile to the face of your host or hostess and make a lasting impression. Here are a few of our favourite suggestions:

Gold box of Chinese green teaTea. Tea has become SO popular! Grab a beautiful tin of your favourite blend from one of the designer tea shops, or simply put together a basket with a selection of small packages. There are quality teas at health food and grocery stores. Want to go all out? Add a couple of china tea mugs to your gift.

Salt and Pepper Shakers. Seriously! Gift stores have the cutest ideas! I’ve seen penguins, tabby cats, interlocking sets, vintage set… when you find a store that sells them, pick up a few sets to have on hand. They are usually very reasonably priced.

Coasters. You can never have too many! I found gorgeous high end coasters at a warehouse sale last year and gave them to all my friends as hostess gifts. They were a huge hit! It’s another case of when you see them, stock up!

Cookie RecipeRecipe in a Jar! Layer all the ingredients for your favourite cookie or muffin recipe in a beautiful jar, label and decorate it for the season – and of course include the recipe!

Incense and Burner. I recently gave this as a housewarming gift with great success! Health and “green” stores carry beautiful wooden incense burners and a great selection of incense. I like Nag Champa. It’s very popular and suits both feminine and masculine tastes.

Chocolate Covered Fruit. You can buy chocolate covered strawberries and green apples, already beautifully prepared and boxed – or make them yourself. So much more interesting than the standard box of chocolates!

aloeAloe Plant. It’s beautiful and useful! You’ll find them at most nurseries or the grocery store. Put it in a pretty pot and wrap in cellophane and ribbons. Include information about the many uses for aloe. Aloe is a great healing plant; its stems are wonderful for sunburn, rash, insect bites, cuts and much more. Google it – you’ll be amazed!

Wine Glasses. A pair of fun, patterned or colourful wine glasses is a perfect gift. You’ll find a great selection at discount label stores.

Apron. Again, there are so many to choose from! There are aprons with half or full coverage, playful or serious, flowers, stripes, even aprons with fun messages on them. And don’t forget, there are great aprons for the host as well – including for barbecuing.

Christmas arrangement of amaryllisVase. Bring flowers IN a vase! The hostess won’t need to take time away from guests to find a vase and arrange the bouquet. And of course, the vase is reusable again and again.

Salad Dressing Bottles. More and more people make their own healthy salad dressings these days – and there are lovely sealed bottles for preparation and storage. Bring a beautiful empty bottle, wrapped for the season, or even better, bring one with your favourite homemade dressing inside!

Hand Cream. Having a party usually means lot of housework and preparation. Treat your hostess to an indulgent hand cream.

Napkin Rings. If you know your hostess’s taste and décor, this makes a thoughtful and practical gift.

Recipe Book. If your hostess loves to cook or bake, bring her a recipe book. Go to Google to learn what’s popular this season.

What’s the best gift you can bring your host or hostess? Gratitude! Entertaining is a lot of work. Tell your hostess how much you appreciate the effort, offer to help clean up and leave with a big hug! Wherever you go this holiday season, travel safely and enjoy!

How to Choose the Perfect Sofa: What to Know Before You Shop

December 14, 2012 by Stoney Creek Furniture

A comfy sofa is a wonderful thing.  It’s a place to chat, to nap, to watch TV, to read, maybe even to enjoy a late-night snack. It’s usually the focal point of your living or family room and a sizable investment – yet many of us buy a new sofa without doing a lot of homework.

Here are a few things to consider before you head to your furniture store. Be prepared and you’ll make a smart purchase that you’ll be happy with for years…

Size. Generally, follow the large room, large sofa; small room, small sofa rule. But take other things into consideration too. Do you want to include other chairs? A coffee table? An ottoman? Make sure you do a walk-about when you measure to be sure there’s plenty of space to get around the room effortlessly.

In a small room, an apartment size or 2-seater may be your best option. With a few side chairs, this can be very functional. But don’t sacrifice design. Go for something strong with clean lines. Hint: Open legs on your sofa will make the space look less busy.

Vasari_77311-LSS-b1Use. Do you like to watch movies as a family? Do you host wine parties? Game nights? Have overnight guests? The first thing to determine is how, and how often, your sofa will be used. All your other decisions come from understanding the functionality of this key piece of furniture.

UpholsteryUpholstery. If you have young children or pets (or a messy partner!) forget about beige linen! Durability is a huge factor. Go for a sturdy but attractive fabric. Patterns help camouflage small stains.  Leather is a solid choice, but be sure you know what you’re getting. Grades and quality of leather vary widely – and light-coloured leathers show wear more quickly. Generally, go for neutral coloured upholstery that you won’t tire of and can be dressed up with accessories for different looks. Hint: If you are adventurous, a sofa in a bright colour makes a gorgeous statement.

TuscanyQuality. When you’re examining sofas, lift one end to see if it feels unexpectedly light, or jiggles or creaks as it is raised. Red flags! The frame should be made of a hardwood like maple or birch and at least an inch and a quarter thick. Joints should be put together with screws, dowels and glue. The frame should be well padded. Squeeze the arms and back; the less frame you feel, the better. The springs should be bouncy and close together, whether they are spirals or long S-shaped wires. Cushions should fit the frame without gaps or crowding; the foam should have a density of at least 1.8 pounds per cubic foot.

Shape and Style. A modern sofa will be simple with few curves. A traditional sofa will be more rounded, with touches like buttons. Choose what appeals to you and complements your decor. If you enjoy an eclectic look, mix it up. A prim and proper settee can be perfect in a modern room.

There are numerous types of sofas – the standard 3-seater, the love seat, the sofa bed, the sectional and the sofa with drawers and storage. Do your measurements and assess your needs. One of the most versatile styles is the sectional. It provides lots of space for a family and can divide spaces beautifully (example: living and dining rooms).

AnnieAccess. This is important – and I speak from experience! If the sofa won’t fit through your doors, or up your stairs, you will be frustrated and disappointed. Measure and measure again.

PrimroseComfort. That’s what it’s all about, right? Spend at least 15 minutes on the sofa before you buy it. See if it “fits” you. You should feel supported and have no issues getting up or down.

Soda_Soda-bKnowledge. Choose a store you can trust with salespeople who can answer all of your questions. Don’t be pressured or rushed – it’s a big decision.

Speaking of knowledge, you can trust Stoney Creek Furniture to give you all the information you need to make the right sofa choice. The sales team is non-commission, which means you get straight talk and honest advice. With about 300 sofas and loveseats on display in leather, upholstery and custom upholstery options, you’re sure to find the perfect sofa.

Whatever sofa you choose, here’s wishing you comfort and joy.
