Getting Organized: Tips for Busy Moms

September 7, 2012 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Mario Andretti once said, “If everything is under control, you’re going too slow.” But then Mario never had to juggle a job and a home and kids and school and soccer practice – and keep everything running smoothly. My guess is that Mario had a housekeeper and a personal assistant to maintain control while he spent his days racing cars!

If you’re like most moms, whether you have an outside job or not, keeping things under control is a daunting task. And now with the kids back to school, the demands may be even greater. So what do you do? How do you get everything done and keep your sanity?

Here are a few small ideas – maybe you can even find a little time to do what YOU enjoy:

  • Make two or three meals at once. Always make enough for two or three dinners. Freeze the extra meals. On a rushed night, thawing and heating is so easy.
  • Breakfast for dinner. Occasionally, eggs, toast and cereal, maybe with ham or bacon, make a yummy dinner. Kids love it. Add a big fruit salad and sliced tomatoes, and you are good to go.
  • Lay out clothes the night before. Put out everything, right down to socks, underwear and shoes. Do it for your kids AND for you.
  • Buy birthday gifts in bulk. If you have kids, you have birthday parties. Buy the gifts all at once. If you find a toy sale, or after Christmas clearance, even better. And don’t wrap. Bags and tissue are faster.
  • Enlist your kids to help in the kitchen. Yes, at first it may take more time than it saves. But eventually they will master their chores and take pride in helping. Things like emptying the dishwasher, cleaning veggies, even making salad, are great kid-friendly tasks.
  • Scissors. Keep a pair of scissors safely stored in pretty much every room. Trust me, you will need them – and you won’t have to run downstairs and rummage through the kitchen drawer.
  • Lists. Attach a small notepad and pen set (these are easy to find at discount stores) inside cupboard doors throughout the house. Bathroom, kitchen, pantry. Add what you need as you run out. Then on shopping day, just tear off the sheets and you’re good to go!
  • What’s in your pantry? It goes without saying that you need staples like flour, pasta, rice, sugar, etc. But what other things make a meal possible when you have NO TIME to shop? I always keep these items in my pantry: canned tuna, canned tomatoes, canned soups, broths, stock cubes, canned peas, canned mushrooms, canned kidney beans – and always some frozen vegetables and shrimp in the freezer.
  • Mesh bags. Everyone in the family gets their own mesh laundry bag for socks and undies. Dirty items go straight here, like a hamper, and then the bag is just dropped in the washer. Sorting is unbelievably easy. You may even convince your kids to sort their own!

It’s all about making life easier so that you and your family can spend more quality time together and on your own. Who knows? You may even find time to take up car racing!!

Family Activities on a Budget: For Labour Day or Any Day!

August 31, 2012 by Stoney Creek Furniture

For most kids, Labour Day weekend is their last taste of freedom before the school year begins. It’s also a wonderful time to reconnect as a family and plan some time together.

This Labour Day weekend, do something fun and unique with your family. Whatever the age of your children, I think you’ll find a great suggestion below. And the best part? We are keeping it low cost. You really don’t need mega-bucks to have a mega-good time! Let the fun begin!

Top 10 Budget Ideas for Labour Day Weekend Fun

1. Dollar Stores Crafts. Bring home a selection of great odds and ends for crafts. For $20, you can get lots of stuff! Share with your kids and tell them to make whatever they want with what you’ve bought. (Add some glue sticks, scissors, etc.). Make sure that you join them and get creative!

2. Croquet. A croquet set is inexpensive and so much fun! Maybe the neighbours will join you and you can make it a Croquet Event with a pot luck after.

3. Bubbles. Yes, bubbles! At a dollar or two a bottle, you’ll have a blast! Make sure there is a bottle for everyone.

4. Scavenger Hunt. This can be a great activity, especially for older children. There’s a little work involved in organizing, but the cost is low and the fun factor is high! Have a prize for the winner. If you have enough participants, form teams.

5. Old-Time Fun. When I was a kid, we played jump rope a lot. A long rope with a bunch of kids and cute little songs. Why not get a game of skipping going in your neighbourhood? You just need a full length skipping rope and a lot of energy! Double Dutch anyone?

6. Water Balloons. A good old fashioned water balloon fight is great fun. It’s so affordable and the kids will love it.

7. Redecorate a Room. If your kids are a little older, a Labour Day weekend project to redecorate a room may be a super family event. Choose a room that the whole family uses – a recreation room, bathroom, etc. Choose paints and fabrics together and give them tasks to help with painting, etc. Really listen to their ideas!

8. Whatever happened to. . .Kids today often don’t know how to knit, needlepoint, woodwork, etc. Take the time to teach them. It will preserve the tradition and they will acquire a new skill.

9. Photo field trip. Head to an interesting spot and take some pictures. Bring your digital cameras if you have them and include some disposable cameras so that everyone has one. After you’re done you can print the pictures and choose a few to make a collage to frame and hang in your home.

10. Pizza party. Everyone loves pizza right? How about making one at home? The kids can help with rolling the dough, sprinkling the cheese and chopping the ingredients. When it’s all done, serve it in the backyard picnic style.

These are just a few cheap and cheerful suggestions to get you started. Whatever you do this holiday weekend, have fun, play safe and hug your family lots!

Kids’ Rooms & Furniture – Making it Fun and Fresh

August 28, 2012 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Can you believe that it’s back to school time already?! It’s always been my favourite time of year. Fall is the perfect time for fresh starts (i.e. fall fashion!) and refocusing after a long and lovely summer.

For our kids, back to school means back to friends and classes – and to homework! As parents, we invest so much effort and money in making sure that our children have the very best school supplies – but what about their study area? Having a cool and comfortable bedroom can be inspirational and motivational.

Pointers to Create a Child’s Room that has Function and Flair

Don’t go overboard on a theme. A few themed items are great but resist too much of a good thing. One themed focal piece and some accessories are usually enough – mix with soothing neutrals for balance.

Focus on sleep, storage, study and play. Your child’s room serves many roles and that can mean too much stuff! It can actually confuse rather than inspire. Do your best to minimize clutter. Backs of doors and ceiling hangers can work wonders. Make sure play space and study space are inviting.

Buy sensible fabrics. Silks, linens and nylons won’t wear well with heavy usage and they don’t resist spills and stains. Choose durable, easy-care fabrics such as denim, cotton and canvas. Look for tightly woven fabrics which are stronger and last longer.

Protect your walls. To reduce handprints and smudges, choose wall paints with a satin finish. Some paints have a scrubbable finish which is great in high-traffic areas. Installing wainscoting can help reduce damage to walls too. And most importantly…

Choose quality. Quality means durability and that means kid friendly. When you choose solid, well built basics, especially in furniture, they will grow with your child. You and your child can be proud of their bedroom!

Trends Today

Gone are the days of matchy-matchy furniture for kids’ rooms. Today, a child’s room can be as stylish and sophisticated as any room in the house – without breaking the budget. Kids’ furniture is often modern and sleek, or even with a touch of unexpected whimsy.

There are some amazing designers that specialize in kids’ furniture. They are on the pulse of what children want and need in furniture: form, function and fun.  I think you’ll be surprised at just how far we’ve come from brown bunk beds and dull desks! Imagination rules (and no, you won’t have to break the bank!)
