How to Wow Guests with Your Entranceway and Staircase

March 9, 2018 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Some of the best opportunities to showcase your sense of style are right inside your front door – the entranceway and stairs! When a guest steps into your home, these are the first areas they see. Not only that, you may find that there’s even space for extra storage or to create a cozy nook. I hope our ideas inspire you!

Entranceway and Stairway accents

Add a bench or console table to you entranceway for extra storage; and a large clock can bring some fun to your space – and keep you on time!

Entranceway

Welcome your guests with an entranceway that speaks volumes about your good taste! Here are some of our suggestions:

  • Accent console or chest. Practical and beautiful, an accent console or chest can be used to house gloves and hats, dog leashes, sunglasses and much more. Not to mention, the top is perfect for a fresh bouquet of flowers and a pretty bowl to keep keys in easy reach. I suggest an accent chest in a glorious rich colour or with metallic accents – don’t be shy.
  • Coat rack. Even if you have a hall closet, I love the convenience of a coat rack! It’s quick and easy and adds a casual vibe to your entryway.
  • Every entryway needs a bench or chair! You can find a size for any space, plus there are options with storage. Be sure the colour and style complement your accent table and other elements.
  • On the walls. Metallic wallpaper or a dramatic paint colour adds excitement to an entranceway. This is also the ideal location for art that you love, whether it’s a large abstract or a grouping of old black & white family photos. Remember this is the first impression of your home!
  • Large mirror. Most of us hang a mirror in the entranceway, but why settle for something small over a table? If you have room, hang a large vertical mirror that opens the space and reflects light.
  • Statement light fixture. If there’s a perfect place for a glamourous chandelier or funky industrial light, this is it! Even if the rest of your home is more subdued, entryway lighting should definitely stand out and get noticed!

Stair Landings

Depending on the size of your landing, you can go beyond the predicable (although still lovely) vase or plant. Why not ‘furnish’ your landing with one of these ideas?

  • Bookcase – takes up a small footprint but delivers lots of vertical storage and a display area Accent table or chair – choose something that makes a bold statement
  • Reading nook – how about a gorgeous leather wingback chair and lamp?
  • Mini-office – perhaps you have space for a pretty desk and chair?

Stairway Walls

Often overlooked, this a great location for a grouping of paintings or photos. Make it farmhouse trendy by adding a large initial, meaningful word or a dried wreath in an ‘organized random’ pattern. Or stay traditional with symmetry and perfectly balanced/aligned images. PS Very large clocks are timeless in a stairwell!

Enjoy making your entranceway and stairs a fabulous invitation to your home!

How to Develop Healthy Sleep Habits

March 2, 2018 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Most of us lead busy, demanding lives with stressful, jam-packed days. As we try to fit everything that needs to be done into our schedules, we’re often left with too few hours for sleep – and even then – the quality of our sleep is compromised by worry, restlessness or a poor sleep environment. If you’re getting fewer than 7 hours of sleep a night, it’s time to make some changes to your sleep habits – it’s critical to your physical, mental and emotional health! Below are expert suggestions that are proven to help you get your zzzs!

Choose the right mattress for better sleep

Choose the right mattress for better sleep

Choose the right mattress. Do your research before you head out mattress shopping. Bring your partner with you. Take all the time it requires to find the ideal mattress to ensure you get quality sleep each night.

Unwind before bed. Yoga, reading or listening to quiet music are excellent ways to relax – whatever you find soothing.

Be sure your bedroom is cool, dark and restful. Your bedroom should be an oasis of comfort; an escape from everyday stress. Keep electronics out of your bedroom if possible – or at least turned off at night. Those little red lights on equipment are small, but they can be disruptive. Turn off your cell phone.

Develop a pre-sleep routine. Find an evening bedtime routine that works for you and stick with it. Do the same thing every night: 15 minutes of reading, a warm bath, enjoying a hobby like painting, etc. Your body will come to associate the activity as a wind down to sleep.

Stick to a sleep schedule. Your body clock loves going to bed and waking up at the same time each day. ‘Assign’ yourself 7-9 hours (some people need a little less or more) of undisturbed rest each night.

Prep your body. This progressive relaxation technique comes from the Institute of Naturopathic Sleep Medicine in Seattle, Washington. Curl your toes tightly for a count of seven, and then relax. Repeat through each muscle group, working up from your toes to your neck. By the time you’re done, you should be thoroughly relaxed.

Write down your stresses. A couple of hours before bedtime, unburden yourself of things on your mind by writing them down. It really helps to let the worries go and encourages restfulness.

Lavender is the most popular herb suggested for sleep!

Try lavender. Of all the herbs suggested for sleep, lavender is the most popular. Keep a sachet under your pillow or on your nightstand; or take a lavender-infused bath at bedtime.

Don’t stay in bed if you can’t sleep. Some of us roll around for hours, but the truth is, the longer you do that, the more your bed becomes a barrier to sleep. Leave the bedroom. Go someplace quiet to read or meditate for a short time. Don’t start working or doing any ‘productive’ – your goal is to wind down and return to bed when you feel sleepy. Read more about this and other sleep habits.

Exercise! Don’t exercise 2-3 hours before bed, but do exercise during the day! Exercise helps us fall asleep faster and sleep deeper. It’s also a great way to channel stress, again leading to better quality sleep.

Get light at the right time. When you wake up, open the drapes or blinds right away. Get out and into the sunshine as soon as you can. Not only is the vitamin D good for you, but bright light sets your body clock to seek sleep about 15 hours later. At the same time, enjoy low lighting in the evening for a few hours prior to sleep.

Don’t nap too much. There’s nothing wrong with a nap if you’re really tired – but keep it to 20 minutes maximum and always earlier in the day. Evening naps disrupt sleep cycles.

Monitor food and drink choices. Alcohol can disturb your sleep cycles; avoid it later in the evening. Other culprits include caffeine (check for hidden caffeine in food), spicy foods and high fat foods. A small snack near bedtime is a good idea though – foods high in tryptophan encourage sleep. Try dairy, nuts, bananas, honey or eggs. Carbohydrates complement these foods, enhancing the sleep effect. A slice of bread, cereal or crackers served with any of these foods is a perfect combination.

2018 Trends in Farmhouse Decor: How to Update Your Space

Plank Road Collection

If you’ve fallen in love with the rustic beauty and easy charm of farmhouse decor, relax, it appears it’s become a classic that’s here to stay. Whether you like true farmhouse styling or a hybrid style that includes industrial elements to add urban chic, here’s how to update your space to be 2018 ready.

Dark wood tones.

Woods are back for farmhouse decor in 2018, in rugged medium and dark shades. It’s a robust look, moving away from the all-white style that’s been popular in recent years (see more below). Not to worry though, blend a few wood pieces with the white furnishings you already have for an uncontrived, organic vibe that’s also on trend. Keep in mind that wood can be added in furnishings, but also in accessories and on floors and ceilings.

Cool woods.

Grey, distressed and raw woods are ultra popular for 2018 as are brown woods, always with a cool rather than a warm colour base. These tones beautifully complement the white elements you may already have!

Open storage.

Exposed shelves, hooks and racks have always been a style staple for farmhouse homes; in 2018 the trend expands to open storage. Mesh and wire baskets, wooden boxes and distressed crates are both practical and trendy. Use a mix of vintage and new, perhaps including recycled wooden product boxes for whimsy – and display them with pride!

Less white/neutral, more colour.

All-white decor is waving good-bye in 2018, even in farmhouse styling. Not that white and neutral decor isn’t still a go-to look for walls and foundation pieces, it’s just seeing an infusion of colour – bright pops of bold and jewel tone shades, plus warm, rich hues like brick red and terra cotta (which look incredibly in a rustic setting btw!).

Dark metallics.

Brass, copper and gold have made a huge comeback in recent seasons, along with a trend toward mixing metallics (stainless steel and nickel still look great too!). 2018 sees dark, muted, rugged metallics taking centre stage in farmhouse decor, including black, dark pipe metal grey and dark brown/rust. These metal tones are perfect for cabinet hardware, door handles, faucets, etc. and are popular accents on furnishings in combination with wood.

Farmhouse decor is wonderfully laid back and comfortable. There are no strict rules to follow, so it’s easy to rejuvenate your farmhouse space for 2018. With a few small changes/additions, you’re ready to take on the new year in style!

The Hottest Patterns and Prints for 2018

February 13, 2018 by Stoney Creek Furniture

At long last, traditional neutrals are stepping back as colour comes forward in our homes – in rich jewel tones, warm shades like terra cotta and colours that act as neutrals (like sage and navy). With this joyous refocus on colour also comes a renewed interest in patterns and prints.

What are the latest trends in patterns? How can you integrate them into your home? Read on!

Geometrics. 2018 makes a nod to retro 1960’s and 1970’s décor with a wide range of geometrics on furnishings, accessories, walls and even ceilings! Classic stripes are abundant, as well as triangles, chevrons and the most trendy of all, the beloved circle.

Greenery. A love affair with house plants and all things green continues in 2018, including on our upholstery. Large scale tropical leaves are the most on trend, featuring palm fronds and willowy stems.

Florals. Timeless and traditional, floral prints are always beautiful. This season, they’re big, bright and fun. Look for contrasting colours in floral draperies, cushions and furnishings.

Quatrefoil. Did you know that quatrefoil means ‘four leaves’, from the Latin quattuor? Originally referring to clover patterns, quatrefoils have come to refer to any variation of four-leafed pattern. This season they’re adorning upholstery, accessories, rugs, tiles and beyond – a beautiful mix of trend and tradition.

Ikat. If you love vibrant colour and a Bohemian sensibility, Ikat fabrics are for you. Ikat is a traditional textile dyeing technique, popular in Asia and South America. Ikat fabrics are typically bright and multi-coloured with gorgeous intricate patterns.

Texture. Combined with abundant patterns this season, you’ll also see lots of texture in fabrics. Luxe velvets, yarns, nubby wool, linen (imperfect wrinkles are also on trend!) and of course, cotton.

How do you bring it all together? Here are a few rules to guide you:

  • Always anchor vivid patterns with neutrals and plains. The eye must rest; too many patterns are confusing and chaotic.
  • Use juxtaposition for maximum impact – for example, florals set against the ruggedness of urban industrial or farmhouse décor.
  • A pattern in isolation looks random. Repeat one or two patterns in several elements – for example circle upholstery on sofa throw cushions can be echoed on sheer draperies with subtle circles and a circle-shaped ottoman.
  • Keep intensity consistent. Don’t display pastels against bright patterns. Instead try solids in the same palette.

Enjoy adding patterns and prints to your home this season! They will add incredible ambience.
