Ah, the ocean and the beach. This look is relaxed, comfortable and serene – a weekend escape feeling every day. The vibe is light, airy and carefree with soft neutral palettes partnered with abundant blues and greens; navy and white stripes are trademark. Windows are big and exposed; furnishings are typically light coloured and plush with lots of pillows; elements of nature like seashells and driftwood are welcome.

Definitely not for the shy or modest, Glam is luxurious, sumptuous and dramatic. There’s no room for subtlety in this style – think bold palettes infused with purple, red, bright blue and emerald green. Furnishings are equally attention-grabbing, featuring velvet, gold metallic, tufting, ornate antiques and touches of Victorian grandeur. It’s pure opulence.

Mid-Century Modern.

This 1950s and 60s look is characterized by simplicity and functionality. It’s minimalist, yet definitely quirky and fun-loving. Deep colors like orange, yellow, olive green and brown are pervasive in this style. Traditionally mixed with acrylic and glass. For an updated look, mix with woods and metals. It’s fun and fresh.

Farmhouse/Rustic.

Ultra trendy, Farmhouse has become popular not only for its down to earth aesthetic, but also because it marries so well with more modern furniture. Farmhouse pieces look lived in even when they’re brand new – worn leathers, distressed woods and muted metallics. Natural elements like beamed vaulted ceilings and reclaimed floors enhance the look. Imperfection is desirable – warmth, whimsy and a handcrafted feeling fit beautifully.

Mediterranean.

This old-world style is inspired by the sun-drenched coastal regions of Spain, Greece and Italy. Lots of rich blues, yellows, warm reds and terra cotta comprise the palette, reflected in textured walls and fabrics like velvet and linen. There’s a sense of history to this style, with substantial heavy furniture, often ornate, that beautifully combines elegance and comfort.

How to Personalize Your Home Office for Fun and Function

September 1, 2017 by Stoney Creek Furniture

For most of us, September signals new beginnings – back-to-school, the start of crisp, cool mornings and the excitement of a new season ahead. I confess, I am still drawn to the bright back-to-school store displays and indulge in new supplies for my office every September. Binders, pens, markers – it’s tough to resist! Are you like me? This year, let’s go a step further. How about redecorating your home office or your family study space?  Here are a few of our favourite ideas to make it one-of-a-kind:

It’s All about the Desk!

At the heart of any office or study space is the desk. There’s no limit to your options – executive double pedestal desks, traditional French Provincial or Queen Anne styling, contemporary desks with rugged finishes, L-shaped ultra spacious desks, farmhouse styles, even small schoolhouse desks. Choose one you love and most importantly, that fits your needs. HINT: A dining room table can also make an amazing desk if you want lots and lots of space!

Vintage Details.

Whatever your office space style, vintage accessories add character and interest. I love antique typewriters – what about you? Vintage cameras, antique books, a 1940s telephone, an old banker’s lamp – these details make an office your very own.

Accent Chairs.

If you have the space, add a spectacular accent chair to your office. It’s ideal for a visitor or for contemplation, away from the distractions at your work station. Choose a classic leather wing back chair, a vivid blue club chair or a glamourous velvet tufted chair.

Colour.

We typically think of offices in classic neutrals, but to make it your unique space, add vivid pops of your favourite colour in accent furniture, accessories, draperies or storage bins/baskets. Teal, fuchsia and jewel green are all trendy this season.

Think outside the Cabinet.

Don’t limit your storage choices to a filing cabinet. Repurposing is a popular alternative. Consider a credenza or sideboard – there are so many contemporary and traditional styles available with ample storage options. Make it the focal point of your office.

Whimsy.

An office doesn’t have to be all work and no play. Personalize it with a gallery wall – how about a selection of clocks or a framed collection of favourite vintage advertisements? Maybe a display of black and white pet pictures? Throughout your office, leave space to showcase the things you love. They will inspire you.

Fall Colour Trends: How to Update Your Home

August 25, 2017 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Of the four seasons, none is associated more with changing colours than autumn. As the leaves shift from green to orange, red and yellow, we start to think about changing colours in our homes too. What are the 2017 fall colour trends for the home? Let’s have a look!

Teal.

Blue is timeless and always stylish. This season, teal is a cheerful take on blue – bringing a hint of the ocean to your space. It’s uplifting! Mix teal with other blues or indulge in layers of teal only. Teal pairs well with pure white and grey, giving neutral palettes a breath of fresh air.

Emerald.

Green is super trendy for fall. Our favourite shade is emerald. Depending on where and how you use it, it’s surprisingly flexible – going from warm and cozy to ultra luxurious. Go all out with emerald upholstery (how about trendy velvet?), walls and rugs, but keep it from getting overwhelming with simple hardwood flooring and streamlined furnishings in light wood finishes.

Dark Brown and Black.

Don’t think sombre, think dramatic. Dark charcoal, chocolate brown and even black are showing up on walls this fall. It’s intense, exciting and very intimate. Keep the floors and furnishings lighter for balance. (HINT: Black and brown accessories let you sample this trend rather than diving in!)

Pinks and Mauves.

In a sea of rich shades, soft pinks and mauves are a subtle alternative. Whether on walls, furnishings or fabrics, pinks infuse a space with calmness, hope and yes, a touch of romance. This season’s muted pinks are less ‘bubble gum’ and more ‘blush’ – definitely sophisticated!

Dull Brass.

Sure, it’s a finish more than a colour. But it’s important to note that while you’re updating your home’s palette, it’s a great idea to add a few accessories in aged/dull brass. This season’s preferred metallic pairs well with almost any colour; its warm patina adds charm to any space. Aged brass partners perfectly with elegant emerald, saturated blues and rich browns.

Monochromatic Palettes.

Monochromatic colour schemes never go out of date. This season, grey is the go-to colour choice. Keep it trendy and interesting by adding patterns in accessories like rugs and drapes. Don’t forget – a splash of colour in wall art or an accent chair is wonderfully eclectic and fun!

Colour Blocking.

Use two or three colours together (bold shades are popular) and layer them or showcase them side by side. There are many colour blocked items available – boldly striped wallpaper and geometric patterns on cushions for example. Or do-it-yourself with a bold accent wall divided into three colours – maybe even triangles.

How to Get the Industrial Look (Loft Optional!)

August 18, 2017 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Ever look longingly at pictures of city lofts and converted factories? The rugged beauty and urban sensibility of these spaces is definitely envy worthy and of course, perfect for industrial decor. But before you abandon hope of enjoying industrial style in your ‘regular’ house, read on. Industrial chic is more attainable than you think!

The key words are “exposed” and “utilitarian”.

In an industrial home, the inner workings of the space are proudly displayed. Whether pipes, plumbing, exposed brick or support beams, there’s nothing to hide. Unrealistic for your home? How about adding a wall of brick to your kitchen or installing steel columns or adding distressed wood beams to your ceiling?

Showcase bold, graphic art.

Murals, large canvases of abstract art and simple graphics, letters, numbers and symbols are ideal for industrial spaces. Oftentimes paintings are done right on the walls and brick for an organic look.

Embrace simplicity.

The essence of industrial chic is simplicity. Adornment should be minimal and functional. Furniture may have features like castors. There is a feeling of purposefulness in every element of an industrial space – reminiscent of the hard-working factories that inspired it.

Reuse and repurpose.

Vintage mixed with new is typical of industrial style. If you can find original hardwood floors, architectural elements or fixtures from an industrial building, go for it! Reclaimed and reused is integral to industrial chic.

Choose the right metals.

When you’re buying new furnishings and accessories, seek metals that blend with the spirit of original industrial artifacts. Wrought and cast iron, nickel and copper (a little tarnish is welcome) fit the bill.

Accent with rugged fabrics.

Think unpretentious and utilitarian, never fancy. Wool, distressed leather, worn suede and durable cottons suit industrial styling perfectly. Items like classic army blankets are prizes.

Keep it neutral.

Classic neutrals best showcase industrial simplicity. Monochromatic colour schemes are popular. Keep in mind that matte black paint can transform accessories and old furnishings into industrial treasures. Touches of black are very on trend.

Consider concrete.

The epitome of industrial ruggedness, concrete works well on floors, countertops and for accent items like planters.

Remember, any home can showcase industrial chic – it’s about paying attention to details and staying true to rugged simplicity. Keep in mind too that you can always blend industrial with contemporary, transitional or even farmhouse styling for a warmer, eclectic atmosphere.
