You can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep

April 3, 2020 by Stoney Creek Furniture

How was your sleep last night? If your answer is “not great” then maybe it’s time to take a look at a new mattress or “sleeping experience” such as a lift-style adjustable foundation. With so many available options, it can often be overwhelming trying to decide. As a sleep specialist, one of the first questions I ask is “who is going to be sleeping on the mattress, and do they have any ailments or issues such as snoring?” Then we can start to explore in more detail to help you get the best night’s sleep possible:

How about your sleeping position?

Because most of us spend the majority of our time in one position, it’s important to know if that’s front, back or side. Sleeping position is the first thing you keep in mind when determining the firmness of your mattress. For example if you are a back sleeper you may need a firmer mattress to contour to your body so you don’t wake up with a sore back. A side sleeper like myself can go with a more plush sleeping surface.

Do you prefer springs or foam?

A foam mattress gives the most support and hits every pressure point, but some people don’t like the feel or lack of bounce or movement. The more coils in a mattress the more support it will provide and most coil mattresses are now pocket coils which are individually wrapped coils to reduce the amount of motion transfer when more than one person is sleeping on it.

Pillows work with your mattress.

Giving your head, neck and shoulders the support they need is an important part of a good night’s sleep. That’s why choosing the right type, weight and quality of the fill, the size of the pillow and the fabric are absolutely key. Of course, your sleeping position also influences your choice in pillow. For example, side sleepers need a thicker, more firm pillow while stomach sleepers may need a softer pillow.

We offer a wide range of Serta mattresses and lifestyle bases.

Why Invest in a Better Quality Sleep Set?

March 27, 2020 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Over the years, I’m always surprised when customers tell me that they are “Looking for an inexpensive mattress”. When I ask them why, I’ve heard, “Nobody is going to see it”, “It’s just for guests”, or “It will be better than the one I have”. That tells me that perhaps they don’t understand how a good night’s sleep benefits their overall health and well-being.

What happens when we sleep?

When we sleep, our body continually cycles through five stages of sleep. From light sleep, right through to REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and deep sleep, our body awakens and then slips back into this sleep cycle. REM and deep sleep stages are the last stages our body goes into and they offer the most restoration and healing for our body and mind. It’s when memories are stored away and cells regenerate. In those stages our bodies are inert for a period of time. The longer we can stay in those stages the better it is for our overall health.

If we sleep on an uncomfortable mattress, or one that doesn’t provide proper support and allow good circulation, our body is forced to wake up and move, disrupting those valuable sleep periods. Our Serta sleep sets offer technologies that cool your body and promote circulation, allowing you to stay in the deep sleep stages longer.

An affordable investment in your health

We offer a wide range of Serta mattresses including iComfort, iSeries, PerfectSleeper and more.

While I understand that everyone has a budget that they need to work within, I usually suggest purchasing the best quality bed you can afford. I often tell customers that it’s better to spend a little less on the bedroom furniture set and invest that money in the mattress. A dresser only holds your clothes, while a mattress supports your body and spine.

Compare your mattress investment to a gym membership. Both support your health. But you can spend $100 a month for a gym membership and only go 3 times a week. You sleep on your mattress 7 to 8 hours a day, every day. A good mattress will last for 7 to 10 years, so a premium mattress will end up costing you less than a dollar a day!

Let one of our sleep specialists help you choose the right mattress to suit your needs and your budget. Remember, if you sleep well, you work well and play well.

First Impressions: How welcoming is your entryway?

We often find ourselves thinking of the function, comfort and freshness of our main living spaces because they’re where we spend the majority of our time. But our entryway says a lot about us and, in some cases, are deserving of an update.

I laugh as I ponder this, because some days, especially Saturdays, the entryway at our home says that things are out of control. I sometimes think that sporty kids should have their own entrance! The reality for most of us is that without a mud room or separate entrance our main entryway has to function for everyone.

You can easily make your main entryway say more about you and your sense of style. Surprisingly, it’s easy to transform this important area into a functional and orderly space that’s up to date and trendy, without investing too much.

Start from the floor, up

Most entryways have a tiled or other hard surface. One way to add some personality is with a fabulous carpet or runner. It’s a great way to bring colour into your entrance. Pick a pattern that reflects your style or a solid that won’t have you worrying about seeing every footprint. I had to go the second route.

Just this week I arrived home to see footwear scattered all over our entrance way carpet. It was immediately apparent that the little people in my neighbourhood don’t know the ‘shoes-off-to-the-side’ rule. I actually love seeing those shoes gather, so the darker carpet was a seriously good choice.

Storage solutions

Every entryway can benefit from storage, but how much space do you have? Will it need to be vertical storage or should it perform more than one function like storage and seating.

Sometimes storage can be the perfect starting point and give you an opportunity to pick a beautiful piece that will be your focal point. Say it’s a chest with drawers for all of your seasonal stuff. Then it’s easy to take it from there. Could you add a perfect piece of art or a cool looking lamp?

What about other means of storage? Recently I found cubbies with hooks which offer a place to sit to take off your boots, along with storage underneath. A few of the benches we picked up come with baskets below as well. I am loving the fact that wovens and wicker are back on trend. They are an inexpensive way to hide just about anything. Pick up a tall basket or belly pot woven piece. I have one that sits on top of a chest of drawers. It has become a great grab and go station and it looks kind of cute!

Take a seat

I have also seen our design team specify multiple cubes or stools that nest under a console table. That way you can pull them out when needed. Another great idea is to coordinate a single chair or put chairs on either side of a console to achieve a symmetrical look that is also functional.

Seating is not always an option for those of us with smaller entryways but it can make all the difference to the functionality of a space. It’s definitely most appreciated by those who need to sit to remove their shoes. We often have middle aged or senior customers asking what their options are. Benches sometimes do the trick.

Change with the season

Changing decor with the seasons can add great character, charm and warmth to any entryway. I tend to adore all things fresh and living, so I rotate from simple pine boughs, to orchids, to paper whites, to succulents. Greens always add that extra special touch. Often you don’t have to spend a dime. I sometimes pick whatever’s in season outside. Sometimes it’s just a couple of ferns or a few hosta leaves in a simple piece of glassware.

Whether it’s editing, adding or freshening up, the entranceway is always the first area of our homes that people see. I am anxiously awaiting spring, so that I can paint that front door! What’s on your list?

What are the benefits of a consultation with Stoney Creek Furniture?

Designing and furnishing your home is an incredibly personal process. It isn’t just about choosing aesthetics, it’s about creating a space that reflects your values and your lifestyle. Thanks to the internet, there are countless resources for inspiration for all of your designing and furniture needs, which can also make the process more challenging. By booking a free, private consultation with one of our style experts, we can help channel all of your ideas into one cohesive plan.

Create your design plan

One of the first things to look at when considering interior design is the colour palette. What colours do you want on your walls and for your accents? Do you want monochromatic? Bright? Earthy? Choosing a colour scheme and creating a mood board is the easiest way to get started on any type of remodelling.

The right accessories make a huge impact. For instance, if you just want to refresh your room, we can offer suggestions that can bring your vision to life. Whether you are looking for pillows, lamps, throws, or rugs, we have everything you need to put the finishing touches on any space.

Pretty with an Edge. An eclectic mix of furniture styles and a bold use of pastels feels fresh and energetic yet decidedly grown up.

Design for your lifestyle

It’s important to choose a style that reflects your lifestyle. When it comes to furniture, choosing the right fabrics will make a world of difference to the longevity and functionality of your space. If you have children, you will need to consider high-performing fabrics so that they can run, jump, and play without comprising the piece, or your peace of mind. If you like to entertain, you might want to select fabrics with more texture or darker colours to protect your furniture from discolouration, staining, and overuse. Whatever your lifestyle, we have the options for you.

“Homeowners benefit in two ways when upgrading the interior design of their homes. Well-planned interior design and furnishings can improve the livability of the home while also helping increase the home’s resale value.”
Alex Irish – AlexIrish.com – Sotheby’s International Realty

Design for your space

It’s easy to get excited about choosing your new furniture, but sometimes that can lead to making choices that are way too big for your space—or way too small. During a consultation, our experts will gather information, such as your room dimensions, what your plans are, and what your taste is, to figure out what size and style of furniture will best suit your needs. We’ll recommend ideal pieces for smaller spaces, like a condo or office nook, or help configure modular sectionals to create the perfect look and feel for your design plan.

Rearrange furniture virtually with our Room Planner program

We aren’t just a furniture store, our Room Planner is a great tool to use when designing your space. This desktop and tablet program allows you to digitally create a blueprint of your space using the actual dimensions of your room as well as add doors, windows, and even plants to your plan. We can work with you to determine a base layout and where you can then add or reformat furniture based on hundreds of products from Stoney Creek Furniture’s collection.

Double Duty Dining. A pedestal table can do double duty as a desk or dining surface while cushioned armchairs deliver living room comfort.

Create a room for your taste and style

Still can’t decide on a colour? Pick a theme first! There are many ways to approach your personal style, and one good way is to consider interior design trends for the year ahead. For instance, you could go with furniture in shades of cream and off-white paired with exposed brick for a modern rustic look; stark white walls with bright, primary coloured paintings and accent pieces for a more modern appeal; or keep it contemporary with minimal colours, furniture, and limited accessories. Stoney Creek Furniture offers a huge range of styles, from farmhouse to classic, to suit your specific taste and style.

Create your dream space on any budget

Dreaming and designing for your future home remodelling is fun, but it can also seem daunting when it comes to paying for it. Fortunately, our design team has this in mind, and with their professional training, they can turn any space on any budget into a stunning, magazine-worthy layout.

One of the benefits of speaking with an expert is that we can go over your needs and your budget. We can offer a variety of suggestions so that you leave feeling ready to move forward with confidence. Stoney Creek Furniture also offers financing on mattresses and furniture, which can help ease the burden of upfront costs while still allowing you to purchase the items you want most.

Bedroom Beauty. Flanking a grand headboard with wide dressers in the same hue adds drama and storage. An oversized mural and wood floors keep the look fresh.
