For many of us, the New Year means clearing out and editing our homes. And while we are definitely in favour of minimizing clutter, the reality of family life is that we need lots of stuff – for hobbies, for special occasions, for different seasons and for different reasons! So this year, rather than an extreme purge, let’s focus on organizing – finding the best ways to store our possessions – quickly, easily and even beautifully.

Design Trends and Colours for 2019 – and How to Showcase Them in Your Home

Pantone, the world’s leading authority on colour, has chosen Living Coral as its 2019 Colour of the Year. Choose it for walls or trim, or my favourite, on ceilings. This colour is a classic!

2019 DESIGN TRENDS

There’s always so much excitement in the New Year as we update our homes. Here are three design trends from House & Home that we love – they’re doable, livable and affordable!

In 2019, you’ll see milky pastels being used as a neutrals, often replacing white. It’s confident, yet soft and subtle. Treat your Windows right and get some Privacy!

Open, beautiful windows can enhance a room and fill it with light. They can however become an open door to your surrounding neighbours. Sometimes we want a little privacy, so here are a few options that allow for more seclusion:

Blinds are screens typically on a roller, come in a huge variety of materials, and can be low in cost. Hunter Douglas blinds can offer easy light control, whereas shadings are fabric vanes held together by sheer material. Shadings allow some light to penetrate while permitting privacy.

Curtains are fabrics that hang and can be tied back. Drapes are similar to curtains except they reach the floor while curtains do not. Curtains and drapes offer a lot of style variety and come in an assortment of materials. You will want to avoid certain sheer fabrics such as silk if you seek privacy. Adding a blackout liner placed in between or behind your curtain/drapes can help prevent sunlight damage and create more privacy.

Shutters are often wooden panels that cover for light control and privacy. Wood offers insulation and a clean style. However be careful if you have rooms that are humid like the bathroom.

Keep in mind when looking for window treatments that you need to look for more than just function. Once you’ve settled on privacy don’t forget about: cost, trends, and style. It’s also important to take children into consideration. If you have young kids at home some trims, accents, or accessories can be dangerous.
