How to Choose the Right Dining Room Table

February 5, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Once upon a time choosing a dining room table was easy. There simply weren’t as many options. A rectangular wooden table was the norm with matching wooden chairs. Rightfully so, these classic suites are still popular and still look fabulous – but today, you have limitless choices! Here are a few tips on how to choose the right dining room table for your space.

Table Shape

Rectangle. The timeless rectangle remains the most popular shape. Most dining rooms are rectangular, making this an ideal fit; as well, a rectangle can accommodate groups of almost any size. It’s functional, attractive, family friendly and available in the widest array of materials and styles.

Oval. The oval table is much like the rectangle. It’s very versatile and works well with any number of guests, but with a gentle curve that makes it a little more formal and traditional.

Round. Definitely the coziest table shape and the most politically correct – since there is no head of the table, everyone has equally status! Round tables are best suited for small spaces and small groups, generally up to about 6. Beyond that number, serving and conversation become awkward. A square room best suits a round table, accentuating its shape and curves.

Square.  Charming in the right setting, square tables offer intimacy for a small group, but as with round, a large square becomes cumbersome. Choose a square to seat 4 people only. Some suggest a square works well in juxtaposition to a rectangular room; it’s up to you!

Octagonal. An octagon functions much like a square or circle, but is more distinctive. For the adventurous only.

Table Material/Style. The variety of finishes available now is amazingly huge – from traditional dark woods to beige/grey distressed woods; from painted surfaces to glass to acrylic to chrome to gold! As for styling, trending right now are trestle tables, metallic accents, large pedestal bases and sleek mid-century styles. But our advice is to choose what you love; most dining rooms suites are used for many years.

Table Use. Keep usage in mind when selecting table materials. Is your table used every day or on occasions only? Do you have a young family? Do you like to do crafts or work on your table? Durability is important. Glossy dark woods will show wear more easily than light, matte or distressed woods, for example.

Table Fit. It’s key that your table functions well in the space available. To ensure every person seated has plenty of room, as well space behind for walking and serving, opt for about 45 inches from the table to the wall or furniture behind. But don’t go much beyond this space allotment; a too small table will look disproportionate and the room won’t be intimate for conversation.

Reviewing these considerations should help prepare you when you start shopping for a new dining room table. Of course, you also need to think about dining room chairs…but that’s another blog!

We’ve been talking a lot about updating your home décor for the New Year, but there’s one key piece of furniture that we’ve yet to cover – your mattress! We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep to our health and well being, yet we often put off buying a mattress until we’re in desperate need. The reality is that if your mattress is 7 to 10 years old, it’s probably time for a new one. This blog is all about caring for your mattress after your purchase, so it will provide optimal comfort for many years. However, if you are looking for tips on choosing a new mattress, you can check out these previous blog posts:

Things to Consider Before Buying a Mattress

Tips on How to Choose the Right Mattress for You

Buying a New Mattress: Why, When and How to Get Started

Now, here are some tips to consider for caring for your new mattress:

Warranty. Be sure you choose a reputable mattress brand that stands behind its products with a solid warranty. Understand your warranty to make sure you get the full benefit and prevent voiding it.

Foundation. Some people invest in a quality mattress but neglect to buy the right foundation. Make sure it’s durable and has enough cross beams to adequately support the mattress and you.

Cover. Protect your mattress with a quality cover that fits well and stays on securely. Zippered options are a personal favourite. I also suggest a waterproof cover for extra peace of mind.

Vacuum. Gently but thoroughly vacuum your mattress frequently with the brush attachment to remove dust, possible dust mites, etc.  It will dramatically extend the life of your mattress.

Rotate. Every 3-4 months, rotate your mattress. Simply spin it to bring the bottom to the top and vice versa. Many people also like to flip their mattresses. This can extend its life and keep it fresher. Some mattress styles cannot be flipped and are designed to wear well with just occasional rotation.

Clean with Caution. Wetting your mattress is not recommended. Should you get a spill, clean it very carefully. It is recommended that you only use warm water, a little dish soap and a damp cloth. Stay away from stronger cleaners as they can destroy the colour and fabric integrity. Ultimately, be sure to follow your manufacturer’s instructions.

Move with Two People. To protect your mattress (and your back!) never move or rotate it alone. Even smaller mattresses can be cumbersome and heavy.

Avoid Bending. When you’re moving your mattress, some flexing may be necessary, but never fold or bend substantially. This can cause permanent damage. Before you choose and buy a mattress, be sure it can fit through stairwells and around corners.

Now is an excellent time to buy a new mattress! Many of our 2015 models are being cleared out to accommodate 2016 arrivals. Drop by our Vaughan or Stoney Creek locations today to experience the selection and talk with our friendly, no-commission sleep experts.

Benjamin Moore Simply White: Simply Perfect for Your Home in 2016

January 22, 2016 by Stoney Creek Furniture

We’ve been discussing colours for 2016 quite a bit lately – and no wonder – a new splash of colour is a wonderful way to welcome the New Year! But what about neutrals? In a year where jewel tones and pastels are making all the headlines, suddenly there’s WHITE – Simply White in fact, Benjamin Moore’s Colour of the Year for 2016 – a soft, vanilla white that offers an alternative point of view. With white as the foundation, neutrals are a beautifully subtle choice this year, offering surprising diversity and palette range.

How to Decorate with White this Season:

In Layers. White is anything but monochromatic. Look for it in shades from crisp white to creamy white and partner it with taupes, beiges and especially with greys. Be sure to include lots of texture with this approach – a sheepskin rug, linen upholstery, lots of pillows and a nubby throw for example. Antiqued and distressed white are also trendy, often with a gentle wash of pale blue.

With Brights. In opposition to classic neutral palettes, white is also being featured with dynamic brights this season. Consider an orange accent wall, accessories in fuchsia, bright blue room doors, or bold colourful art, for example. To keep the look refined, white must be the dominant ‘colour’ with touches of bright and stick with a sleek, contemporary sensibility.

Redefining Rustic. The juxtaposition of white in a home with rugged, rustic décor is unexpectedly fabulous. Old wood floors and rough walls are renewed with a wash of white; vintage furnishings refreshed with white distressing. Add exposed wood ceiling beams for the ultimate in rustic charm.

On Furnishings. Timeless and classic, neutral furnishings are often your best investment. While traditional choices like wood trimmed sofas remain deservedly popular, new takes on the classics are also worth consideration – a recliner in grey or white, a traditionally-styled bedroom suite in distressed wood,  or an elegant ivory tub chair encased in brushed gold metallic.

With Black. As we mentioned in an earlier blog, matte black is showing up everywhere this season. For a sophisticated look, pair it with white. Worried it will be harsh? Choose a distressed wood floor to create softness or add pastel upholstery or window treatments.

Highlighting Architecture. Nothing frames like white. Bright white trim and edging define a space or feature, whether cornices, window sills, baseboards, pillars or much more. New this season is white on white photo treatments using large white mattes with white frames. Create a grouping on a jewel-toned wall for a very trendy effect.
