Home sweet office, classroom, entertainment zone

February 12, 2021 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Rethinking the way our home functions may not have topped everyone’s priority list, but over the past year necessity has pushed it up for many
of us.

Making zones work

Kitchens have become classrooms, dining tables workstations, and bedroom corners mini gyms. While we’ve all done our best to adapt,
many customers have reached out for help with these new “rezoning” challenges.

As furniture experts, our job to find solutions that go beyond just finding a key piece. We want to offer you furniture that provide function, comfort, timeless design, and adds balance and calm to your home and that will enhance your life for many years.

Added functionality = added value

When we source product for our stores, the furniture must check off several boxes on our list. With our customer always top-of-mind, we look for quality and craftsmanship first, then multi-functionality and overall design. If a helpful design element is included in a piece – like a charging station on an arm of a sectional or a power source built right into the desktop – that represents added value for our customers.

Not surprisingly, we’re constantly increasing our home office and entertainment category to keep up with the demand. While we all work and nest at home, our customers need options and storage solutions and options to bring order to their belongings.

Get creative with your furniture

In good design, form should always follow function. A plain old T.V. stand can please some family members, but one that’s also beautiful pleases everyone.

If you’re using your dining or kitchen area for a work/school zone, and you have a little wiggle room, consider moving in a small chest of drawers or adding an accent piece with separate storage. Smaller pieces with individual drawers could be useful to divide up by family member. This can help everyone stay organized and prevent things going missing. If it’s a new piece that you love, later you can always move it to another spot later.

It’s really amazing how we can adapt and make the most out of our stay-at-home situations. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us for help making things more functional or comfortable in your home. Our team specializes in finding ideal solutions with quality furnishings.

Best regards from our homes to yours.

A good night’s sleep is good for your health.

February 5, 2021 by Stoney Creek Furniture

We all know how great it feels to get a good night’s sleep, but what we may not know is how important sleep can be to our health and wellbeing. If you’ve ever played team sports, you can likely recall a coach telling you to get a good night’s sleep before the next day’s big game. Is there science to back up that advice? Turns out there is.

In a recent Mayo Clinic article, “Lack of sleep: Can it make you sick?” Dr. Eric Olson tells us that a poor sleep can negatively affect the immune system. Not only can it make you more  vulnerable to getting sick, it can also affect your recovery time.

We offer a large selection of Serta mattresses. Shop the collection at stoneycreekfurniture.com

Healing happens when you sleep

During sleep, your body releases proteins called cytokines, some of which promote sleep. Certain cytokines need to increase in order to fight off infection, inflammation, or when you are under stress. Not getting enough sleep may decrease production of these protective cytokines. Long-term, a lack of sleep can also increase your risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

2020 brought us all the additional stress of Covid-19, which looks like it’s going to continue well into 2021. Now, more than ever, it’s time to invest in a quality sleep set to help you achieve the healing sleep your body needs.

What you sleep on matters

A good mattress relieves pressure points and decreases the need to toss and turn, which can disrupt sleep cycles and deprive you of the restful sleep you deserve. A properly fitted pillow, selected for the way you sleep (side, front, or back) will further enhance your ability to achieve the 7 to 8 hours of sleep suggested for adults each night. Studies show that your pillow actually contributes up to 30% of your overall sleeping comfort!

You can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep

How was your sleep last night? If your answer is “not great” then maybe it’s time to take a look at a new mattress or “sleeping experience” such as a lift-style adjustable foundation. With so many available options, it can often be overwhelming trying to decide. As a sleep specialist, one of the first questions I ask is “who is going to be sleeping on the mattress, and do they have any ailments or issues such as snoring?” Then we can start to explore in more detail to help you get the best night’s sleep possible:

How about your sleeping position?

Because most of us spend the majority of our time in one position, it’s important to know if that’s front, back or side. Sleeping position is the first thing you keep in mind when determining the firmness of your mattress. For example if you are a back sleeper you may need a firmer mattress to contour to your body so you don’t wake up with a sore back. A side sleeper like myself can go with a more plush sleeping surface.

Do you prefer springs or foam?

A foam mattress gives the most support and hits every pressure point, but some people don’t like the feel or lack of bounce or movement. The more coils in a mattress the more support it will provide and most coil mattresses are now pocket coils which are individually wrapped coils to reduce the amount of motion transfer when more than one person is sleeping on it.

Pillows work with your mattress.

Giving your head, neck and shoulders the support they need is an important part of a good night’s sleep. That’s why choosing the right type, weight and quality of the fill, the size of the pillow and the fabric are absolutely key. Of course, your sleeping position also influences your choice in pillow. For example, side sleepers need a thicker, more firm pillow while stomach sleepers may need a softer pillow.

We offer a wide range of Serta mattresses and lifestyle bases.

Why Invest in a Better Quality Sleep Set?

March 27, 2020 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Over the years, I’m always surprised when customers tell me that they are “Looking for an inexpensive mattress”. When I ask them why, I’ve heard, “Nobody is going to see it”, “It’s just for guests”, or “It will be better than the one I have”. That tells me that perhaps they don’t understand how a good night’s sleep benefits their overall health and well-being.

What happens when we sleep?

When we sleep, our body continually cycles through five stages of sleep. From light sleep, right through to REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and deep sleep, our body awakens and then slips back into this sleep cycle. REM and deep sleep stages are the last stages our body goes into and they offer the most restoration and healing for our body and mind. It’s when memories are stored away and cells regenerate. In those stages our bodies are inert for a period of time. The longer we can stay in those stages the better it is for our overall health.

If we sleep on an uncomfortable mattress, or one that doesn’t provide proper support and allow good circulation, our body is forced to wake up and move, disrupting those valuable sleep periods. Our Serta sleep sets offer technologies that cool your body and promote circulation, allowing you to stay in the deep sleep stages longer.

An affordable investment in your health

We offer a wide range of Serta mattresses including iComfort, iSeries, PerfectSleeper and more.

While I understand that everyone has a budget that they need to work within, I usually suggest purchasing the best quality bed you can afford. I often tell customers that it’s better to spend a little less on the bedroom furniture set and invest that money in the mattress. A dresser only holds your clothes, while a mattress supports your body and spine.

Compare your mattress investment to a gym membership. Both support your health. But you can spend $100 a month for a gym membership and only go 3 times a week. You sleep on your mattress 7 to 8 hours a day, every day. A good mattress will last for 7 to 10 years, so a premium mattress will end up costing you less than a dollar a day!

Let one of our sleep specialists help you choose the right mattress to suit your needs and your budget. Remember, if you sleep well, you work well and play well.
