Family Dining: Creating the Space, Making the Time

November 2, 2012 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Family dining has changed so much over the last couple of decades. When I was a kid, as I’m sure it was with many of you, dinner was a sit-down meal at the same time every night with the whole family present. No discussion – that’s simply the way it was. Wonderful memories!

New home designs, new dining options

Today, our lives are different. Both parents work and children have endless activities around dinner time – soccer, dance classes – and homework too! In fact, all our mealtimes have changed and our homes are changing to accommodate that.

Where does your family like to eat? If you’re like most of us, the kitchen is the hub of the household. Homes are being designed with bigger eat-in kitchens and open concepts that incorporate a family room. It works beautifully. You can prepare a meal while still enjoying time with the kids – and then serve it right there. It’s casual, comfortable and easy!

There is a huge array of furniture available to suit your kitchen size and decor. Maybe you have space for a big country style harvest table and chairs; or perhaps bench seating works for you. Even if you only have a tiny area, you’d be surprised at your options! Furniture is flexible these days with designs to suit every lifestyle. Consider a breakfast nook. A junior dining set – even a 2-seat option – can be very convenient in the morning for a smaller family that’s rushing to grab a quick bite!

The pleasure of a real dining room

If you have a separate dining room, enjoy it! It doesn’t have to be fancy or formal, although it can be! There are traditional, contemporary and country options available and all points in between. You can choose to have a buffet and hutch, a sideboard or just a table and chairs. There truly is something for every budget and every preference. Lots of people choose to mix and match for a fun, eclectic look.

Dining rooms are meant to be used! Don’t wait for a special event. Enjoy dinner for 2 there occasionally. Break out the candles. Dust off the real crystal. You don’t have to do it every day, but find the time to celebrate sitting down together and savouring a good meal and good conversation. Your kids may actually enjoy it too (although they probably won’t admit it!).

Family first

Wherever you choose to eat in your home, the important thing is spending time together as a family. It turns out that bonding and connecting time is critical. In recent studies, family dinner has been shown to be effective in addressing many challenges ranging from childhood obesity to risky behaviors in teens to self-esteem issues to adolescent depression. It’s that important! So juggle the schedule and bring your family together for dinner as often as you can. Turn off the TV and just talk…

An Illuminating Idea: Decorating with Candles

October 26, 2012 by Stoney Creek Furniture

The sun sets on another beautiful autumn afternoon. October is winding down and the chill of November is in the air. It’s sad to say farewell to warm days, but with longer evenings and cooler temperatures come the pleasure of being indoors and getting cozy.

Nothing says cozy – or romantic – better than candles. They provide a glow that relaxes, soothes the soul and even makes your complexion look great! In fact, I keep candles on my desk and I just lit two for inspiration!

But how can you really make a statement with candles?

Light Up Your Home with Candles

Here are a few ideas…

Summer Forever. Add some sand to a wine glass and put in a white tea light candle. So pretty! Do multiples for impact.

Speaking of Wine Glasses. Tip some wine glasses or flutes upside down and add tea lights or tiny candles on top.

Wood You Try This? This makes a huge statement – great for the holidays! Get a “slice” of a tree/log about 3-4 inches thick and place a white pillar candle on top. Add some holly berries and greenery.  Great on a country style table!

Twinkle Twinkle. This is my favourite candle décor idea! Place a piece of mirror on your dining room table and add white pillar candles of varying lengths. Ideally the mirror should be long and narrow (for a rectangular table) so that it acts as a centrepiece along the full length.

Reflections. Place some crystal candle holders with tall taper candles on your bathroom vanity, in front of the mirror. The mirror, crystal and flame make magic together…

Oh-So-Pretty-China. You’ll often find lovely floral china saucers without cups at flea markets for next to nothing. Or maybe you have some pretty saucers in your cupboard already. Add tiny candles for a beautiful old-world look.

Candle Cakes. This looks amazing for a special occasion. Use a layered cake tray to display candles. Be creative with sizes and colours. Add some tiny complementary décor items (silver balls, pine cones or flowers, for example) to accentuate the candles.

Dark Light. While white candles look fresh and pristine, dark candles set a romantic mood. Create a grouping of complementary dark shades like navy, maroon and purple in varying sizes.

Book Look. Taper candles in luxurious candleholders (think silver, brass or polished wood) look so elegant placed on 2-3 stacked books. Choose hardcover books with attractive binding.

Table Setting. A series of small identical candle holders can create a big impact. Picture 10 or more in a line down the centre of your dining room table or along a credenza. It’s perfect for everyday or a special occasion.

Common Scents. Never use scented candles in a dining room – they can easily overpower your dinner!  Save scented candles for the bath, bedroom and living room.

Needless to say, the most important thing to remember with candles is SAFETY. Never leave candles unattended or use with flammable materials.

Draw a bath, light a lavender candle and settle in for a restful evening. Happy candle season!

Free Decor Seminars and More…Come Get Inspired!

Where do you go for inspiration? Where can you find great home decor ideas? There’s a sea of resources available – books, magazines, TV shows, online articles and of course – blogs!!! I recommend that you check out lots of different sources and keep your mind open – creativity is everywhere! Never be afraid to try something different. Rigid decorating rules are gone…

Be Eclectic!

Today, we blend styles and make our homes a true reflection of who we are. It’s so fun and easy! Designers call this the Eclectic Style – but what it really means is that the furniture and accessories you love don’t fit into a standard decorating genre like Country, Traditional or Southwestern. Good for you!

By bringing together a mix of furnishings, fabrics, finishes and objects from any number of periods and countries, it’s possible to create a totally unique environment. Just keep in mind that you may need a neutral wall/floor palette to support your diversity. And of course, in order to be successful, keep scale and proportion in mind. Dare to be original – but never go to extremes – you still want a put-together look.

Decorate Your Condo, Apartment or Smaller House with Panache!

October 12, 2012 by Stoney Creek Furniture

The trend today is toward smaller living spaces. For many of us, it just makes sense! It’s more affordable, less to clean (!) and suits our active out-and-about lifestyles. Why maintain a big home, especially if you have a small family? Of course, having a smaller home doesn’t mean we want to live without luxury and function. Below are some suggestions to make your smaller home beautiful and comfortable.

Big Ideas for Small Spaces

Drapery Illusion. Don’t be limited by the window size. Extend rods and curtains beyond the window for an illusion of more open area. Even use multiple curtain layers for effect. Let the sunshine in!

Say No to Knick Knacks. You will choose better with a few statement pieces. Numerous small ornaments create a cluttered feeling. In short, don’t have too much stuff on display.

Go for Glass Tops. Glass tops on coffee, dining room and bedroom tables make the furniture “float” and appear to take up less space. Keep the trim size to a minimum.

Fresh Flowers Forever. Always, always, your best décor option. Again, don’t go fussy. Choose a single orchid or a few bold sunflowers.

Mirrors, Mirrors on the Walls. Most people know that mirrors open up a space. Think of mirrors as art. Place them where you might put a painting: over a dining room table, on a staircase, etc. One of my favourite looks is to stack two long, thin horizontal mirrors over each other.

A Case for Bookcases. Whoever said that bookcases have to touch the floor?! Mount them higher and leave floor space for something else. Bookcases can go quite close to the ceiling, drawing the eye upward. Consider creating the look of built-ins. Buy or build tall slim bookcases, paint them to match your walls and add a crown moulding on top where they meet the ceiling. This looks amazing on either side of a doorway – and bingo – lots of storage and display options!

Kitchen Cupboards. Same thinking as the bookcases! Go to the ceiling with cupboards and keep as much behind doors or hung off the countertop as you can. Tidy = big.

Keep the Floor Uncluttered. I know, easy to say! But the truth is that nothing opens up a space like visible floors. Light floors generally make a room look bigger. Have a lot to hide? Buy some really cool trunks or covered baskets. Stack them in a pleasing way. Place a chair in front of them, camouflaging the storage and bringing your chair forward in an inviting way!

Furniture in the bathroom. Yes, if you have a little space, adding a tiny shelf or a chair to the bathroom opens up storage possibilities. Gorgeous white towels look awesome stacked on a chair.

Don’t Put Your TV on a TV stand. Mount the TV on the wall and put a console with drawers on the floor. Much more storage room!

Colour is Still Your Friend. Don’t assume everything has to be white! Dark walls, especially with light floors, ceilings and window coverings, can actually make a room look dramatic and large.

Furniture Choices. Keep in mind that the width, height and depth of the furniture have to work with the proportions of the room. Nothing giant-sized, but neither do you want dainty furniture! These days, lots of manufacturers are making perfectly-scaled pieces for smaller homes, with lots of style and appeal.

Drop By. Stoney Creek Furniture offers a broad selection of furniture that is space efficient and multi-use. For example, Durham Furniture, an Ontario-based manufacturer, offers their “Perfect Balance” collection, which fits your space conscious lifestyle. It is solid wood and sized right. Drop in and see the many options!

In a smaller space, remember one motto: Make Everything Count! Have fun making your smaller home your dream home! Talk to you again soon…
